Found this 1961 issue of McCall's Christmas Ideas at one of my favorite non-profit thrifts, Bridgewood Farms in Conroe, TX. Inside: 269 Items! Martha Stewart, eat your heart out.

Love the fact that the red tones in the display fade into each other--of course, nothing says Christmas like lots of red!

Who says no one up-cycled in the '60s? These reindeer look like they should be on display at Pier 1 or Cost Plus. They are almost big enough to pull a sleigh, too.

The vestments for this Christ child statue could be made by following a doll clothes pattern offered by McCall's, Pattern #2463. The instructions, unfortunately, weren't included in the book--readers could by the pattern set for 65 cents from McCall's

South of the Border Buffet

Go South of the Border with your Christmas meal--although back in 1961, that didn't mean you served home-made tamales on Christmas Eve (unless, of course, you lived in Texas!).

Here we have a nice twist on Mexican folkcraft and some Americanized "local" dishes. I must admit that the seafood paella looks good. However, the flan would be so much nice in individual clay cups.

Texas Windmill

I found a handful of 5x7 prints of windmills standing in what appear to be Texas fields, although these scenes are typical of the American mid- and south-west.

I suspect they were taken as proof-of-work by the well-diggers. My brother-in-law worked as a well-digger, installing many rigs like this across the Texas Hill Country.
