I still love the elegance of giant kelp. Not only does it form forests that protect fish nurseries, the new growth is beautiful.

I spent the weekend diving in the Catalina Marine park at Casino Point. This is a great place to find juvenile Garabali. For years I have been trying to get a good portrait of these skittish cuties. Mature Garabali are are solid orange, but when they are young they have these electric blue spots and lines. Although I have been trying for a while, I think I finally nailed it.

I got a new strobe controller and went diving this weekend to check it out. Visibility was a bit poor and there was a lot of surge, but I did run across this little nudibranch. Hermissenda have brilliant colors.

Sea lions definitely have their own personalities. This guy was very shy but had a dopey smile.

This is what California diving is all about. Harbor seals look like over sized inchworms on land, but underwater they are very graceful. He has a nice full set of whiskers.

The Midnight Hour Wreck is located near Farnsworth Bank off of Catalina. It is a 61ft Purse Seiner lying in 100ft of water.

I found this green moray at Catalina Island. My strobes weren't working properly so I shot this entirely by natural light. You can see the moray is being cleaned by some cleaner shrimp. Here one is crawling over his eye. The morays even open their mouths and let the cleaner shrimp clean their teeth. Cool.

At San Clemente Island I finally had an up close and personal encounter with a giant black sea bass. It is hard to gauge sizes underwater but he must have been 7ft long and about 500lbs. Now that is a BIG FISH.
