Setup for this shot

You don't need that much fancy equipment to do a half-decent product shot. Basically just a white sheet of paper and a tripod and you're almost set.

The biggest problem here is that the shadows are very harsh since I'm just using desk lamps. If I were doing this "right", I'd be using strobes of some kind bounced into a light box to diffuse them.

Original click-wheel iPod, 16GB iPhone4.

This www.apple.com/pr/products/ipodhistory/ made me a bit nostalgic so I had to dust off the old guy.

With the exception of the LCD screen, I think the iPod still holds up pretty well from a design standpoint. Fun to charge it up and hear the hard drive spin up. The latest iPod is probably around 1/5 as thick. Crazy times.

Recently realized that I've lived on the coast all my life and have never tried to shoot a sunrise. Crazy right?

Decided to rectify the situation. Weather cooperated today in Marblehead and got a nice early start.

Wasn't quite sure how to tackle it. One thing I was expecting was that it would be difficult to get any really interesting landscape shots with only my 50mm. Turned out I was right. Sunrise on the water is actually kind of boring.

So then I played around and tried to make some creative use of the landscape. Tried some unconventional apertures and did the whole long-shutter mist-effect thing on the beach rocks.

This is one of the few keepers. Really like the colors and the bokeh on the 50mm 1.4.

One thing that surprised me was how little time you have before it gets completely bright and all the interesting light goes away. 30 minutes tops.

All in all it was really fun. Nice and peaceful. I think I'll try it again soon.
