This is at the end of my mom's street. I'm moving her from Dallas to California this week. We're planning on following ourselves in the next couple of months. Beautiful sunset view with some fog rolling in and bunches of sailboats plying Monterrey Bay.

I was contacted last week by a reporter for a newspaper called Northern Pen, serving the northern peninsula of the island of Newfoundland. A local had spotted an even more rare occurrence of the green flash- at sunrise over land! It can and does happen, but is more rare, and could explain why the observer has missed it so many times (I've seen it 3 times, all over ocean). This was my only successful photo of it, and I got about 8 of them before it faded (courtesy of Canon's rapid firing capability). So far it is only in the print edition, so the reporter photographed the page and sent it to me.

Since I was traveling, the reporter from the paper near Labrador retrieved it from Flickr directly. OK, that's where he got it from, but the sentence wording was to somehow position "Labrador" and "Retrieved" adjacently. :)

I was in Ohio last month for a few days unexpectedly, so stopped by Blendon Woods, the same places as the photo next to this one (with the vignette). There were a surprising number of birds there, given temperatures. I'd forgotten that not all birds migrate south in the winter.

This cardinal was staying close to some bird feeders strategically placed near a nature center in the park. It was near-dusk, and I was shooting hand held, so high ISO and short exposure meant I needed to brighten it up in post-processing. This is also 1:1 pixels, so heavily cropped.

IT was mostly earthtone monochromatic, except for the little splash of red.

This treated image is attempting to convey to cold nature of Ohio's, well, nature this time of year. I was back two weeks ago for an unfortunate family issue and spent some extra time retracing some steps from my childhood. This is Blendon Woods, where my parents used to take me when I was a small child.

Loading printer paper backwards can have interesting results. The ink doesn't cure, but instead congeals rather quickly, and for a while at least, you have what amounts to pointillism. This is just a scene from Google Street View, but I rather like it in this form.

Nokia Lumia 920-iPhone 5 Compare

I did a simple in-the-dark shootout last night bewteen an iPhone 5 and the new Nokia Lumia 920 in my living room. I think you can judge for yourself who did best.

The first images on the top are unprocessed on both- literally straight out of the phones.

The bottom images had, only, Auto Levels performed in Photoshop, relying on Photoshop to make the best guess. Youc an see that hte iPhone photo is worthless, still. You can see a little bit of detail on the right side of it, where the light from the single lamp is brightest.

In contrast, though the Lumia image has a bit of a warm tone due to the lamp, it is a usable image. It was quite dark, but the result is very good, especially for a cell phone. I would put this up against any point-n-shoot as well, and will do a shootout with my SLR next.

No flash was used in either photo- they are only using ambient light. I've included a couple of 1:1 extractions from the Lumia image to show how well this handheld image also benefited from the 920's spring-mounted camera (literally, the camera is mounted on shock abosrbers).

I work for Nokia, so there's that disclaimer. But these are real and I challenge anyone to replicate them and post them. Send me a link if you do! And I'm happy to mail you the original images from the device for you to compare.

Family Portrait

These are my first-ever jack-o-lanterns. I bought them yesterday at a farm up in Celina (along with the mini-bales of hay) and carved them today and set up this scene on my front porch. I was out until almost 1am photographing them. Including the drive to the farm- quite a ways north of where I live, I went to a lot of work to get these shots. They are also in 3D, but I am not releasing those just yet as they were for an assignment. However, for now, you can enjoy the fruits in 2D :)

They are supposed to be a family- dad, mom and a young-un.

From the same Frankenweenie premiere, I got to see the honorable Martin Landau. I remember him from the original Mission Impossible, as well as Space: 1999 when I was a kid. He's won several Academy Awards, including one for playing Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton's 'Ed Wood.'

Yesterday I shot my first red carpet event, for the premiere of Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie" in Austin. I'll start off with my favorite shot- this one. Of all the people I photographed- including Tim Burton, she was the only one that said anything to me about shooting in 3D, and she seemed to like that and posed for me.

This was taken from the top of the Astoria Tower, in Astoria, Oregon. My wife wanted to go there since it was founded by Astor (of Waldorf Astoria fame). It was a bit sleepy, but scenic in its locale.

I leaned out as far as I could with the widest-possible angle set at 10mm, to get this.

Here's one last shot at Ruby Beach, where we witnessed beautiful sunset. If you look closely on the beach, you can see it is littered with driftwood- trees that have fallen and washed out to sea, then washed back up on shor.

The Hoh Rainforest is a very magical place to visit. We got there in early evening, a little before sunset, and it was nearly devoid of other tourists- the way I like it :) The lighting was soft and it photographed well.
