Northern Rough-Winged Swallow - Two LIFER bird photos

vidterry posted a photo:

Two photos of LIFER birds for me. So fun to find new birds.

The second photo was shot at long distance, and no amount of processing would make it 'good'. Still, as a lifer - Northern Water Thrush - a warbler - it is great to add to the list, and to show the grab shot.

Female Cowbird

vidterry posted a photo:

I'm labeling this as a female Cowbird. I'm fairly sure of the ID...but welcome correction. This one was flitting around with a male Cowbird, ID absolutely sure. In person this one looked like the females which visit our backyard.

In the photo, this bird appears lighter, and with a hint of yellow on head and chest. In person that was not apparent.

I mention all of this because the photo was made in the woods, in problematic lighting, and in the middle of the warbler migration passing through.

Other ideas about identification certainly appreciated.

Based on the date, and the other EXIF information, I THINK that this was shot with the Nikkor 105mm Micro + 2x TC. The only two other lenses it could have been both seem wrong. Old Nikkor 70-300mm stopped being used several years earlier.

The other possibility would be the Tamron 200-500mm. However, since it's minimum focus distance, 9.2 feet, is the same at all focal lengths, if I had been using that lens I would have taken it out to 400mm or longer...and not shot with it at its shortest focal length.

Sometimes some of these older photos are a bit puzzling, trying to reconstruct the shooting information.

Special Spring Tulip

vidterry posted a photo:

I spent the first half of the photographic day in the woods along the river, and then moved on to photograph early spring flowers. Some tulips were looking good, and I'm going to try to present a few of them just a bit differently than the way some others are shown. Who knows what that even means.

As I continue to try different combinations of gear -- to see what works great and what is not so great. The garden shoot was done with the Tamron 180mm Macro, which has served so well in the past. Most photos were made from tripod, so the absence of image stabilization should not make a difference. The Tamron, though, lacks an auto focus motor. For some reason, it had some difficulty grabbing focus on certain shots, ranging back and forth through the focus point. Apparently it doesn't like to play well with the AF setup of the D7100. The Nikkor 105mm Micro lens had no such problem when I used it.

Both photo sessions -- woods and garden -- gave me some photos that I want to process and share. That's always the goal of course; sometimes it works out, occasionally it does not. Was all good today.

These blossoms bring back childhood memories. I'm sure they've always been around since then, but only in recent years have I noticed them again.

Bleeding Hearts are really hard to photograph well. Getting an artistic composition is a real challenge.

Strutting Canvasback

We recently has a short layover at the lake by a number of Canvasback Ducks. For the most part they stayed well away from shore. I went back into the archives to find previous visits, and came up with a series of shots which included this one.

This image is processed from a photo of a duck again far from shore. It is far too much enlarged and cropped, and it was shot at a too-much zoomed focal length on a lens that wouldn't support such zooming. The pose is terrific; the image itself is marginal...though the best 12mp would do at that range. Hope you like the shot.

Apologies if needed. Within a few short weeks the macro photography will be under way in earnest. I have way too many photos I want to share before then, so I'll likely be uploading two or even three times a day. I know that this will both put pressure on contacts AND preclude their seeing some of the shots. I wish I could figure out a better way. PLEASE feel free to comment on as few of the images as you want!
The Staring Match

vidterry posted a photo:

This is part of the herd of White Tailed Deer that lives in the woods along the Cedar River. Hunting is not allowed there, so they seem content to not stray very far. On this day the group numbered fourteen, though I've seen as many as twenty together.

The older doe in the center is what my Granddaughter likes to call the 'Boss' deer. She controls the movement of the herd. I've previously described how she stomps a hoof when it is time to run. Here's another behavioral tidbit I've observed. When I'm approaching the herd, they will stop and stare, as in the photo. The Boss deer is particularly watchful. If I keep walking -- it is impossible to do so quietly enough -- they will continue to watch until the head doe decides to move off. If I STOP approaching them, and make no movement, it seems to puzzle them. The Boss lady, and sometimes one or two others will actually walk towards me a bit, the better to see what I'm doing.

Then, if I continue to stand frozen, NO movement or sound, apparently that is unnerving, for the hoof will get stomped, and away they run.

Two different times on this day I observed a very interesting behavior. One of the deer in the herd has an injured left rear leg. It can run, but in a limping sort of way. My last view of these deer on the day was when they ran out of the woods and across a small clearing. All ran ahead of the injured doe (I think), except for Boss Mama. She waited, and ran AFTER the hurt deer had cleared. VERY interesting to see.

Mr. Downy Woodpecker Very Close Encounter

Along the Southwest length of Cedar Length there are some thick bushes. Often Sparrows spend their time in the tangles; ducks like to swim in under the bushes for shade and protection.

On this day, I noticed a tiny Downy Woodpecker making a snack of some mites on the branches. He was energetic in pecking at them, and thus allowed me to get quite close. Far closer than I've ever been before. The camera burst noise didn't seem to bother him, and he continued to nibble on the mite version of M&Ms.

Finally I moved once too often, and he flew away. Rather, he flew THROUGH the bushes to a perch several yards distant. I did manage one in-flight shot, but of course since he was flying in the bushes, there is a branch in the way. It is still, though, the best Downy in flight photo I've managed. Just not top level due to the branch.

After referencing another photo, I found this shot completely lost and forgotten, deep in the archives. It has never seen anything remotely resembling the light of day. This exposure was shot in the early spring 2008, about a month after I began using the (then) new D300.

Just too totally sweet to allow to be lost without doing some work on it, and showing it. If still around, this little sweetheart could be a great granddaddy, or great grandmomma by now.

One wonders what other shots are sleeping deep in the old file folders, hoping to get new life...someday.
