Outside of Uvira we monitored a project that UNICEF is implementing through Save the Children UK to reinsert child soldiers back into their villages. Jose had been a fighter with a Mai Mai rebel group. After a couple of weeks in a host family in Uvira he had returned to his village where the project staff arranged for him to have an apprenticeship with a barber who had also been a child soldier. José now has a small barber shop with a friend by the side of the main road and he is getting by.

UNICEF and COOPI are working to get children who were taken into armed groups as soldiers, porters or sex slaves back into their communities. In the project we provide the children with; counseling, an initial training in a skill and a kit of equipment to set them up once they have completed an apprenticeship back in their village. Many of the girls became pregnant during their time in the armed groups so they also receive support for the maternity.

Ermale is the master tailor in the village of Lopka. He agreed to take in youths from his village who had either been in armed groups or who were vulnerable backgrounds as extra apprentices. Normally he is paid a goat to accept an apprentice but COOPI UNICEFs implementing partner on this project had convinced him to accept them for free as part of the villages contribution to reintegrating these children. In the project we provide the children with; counseling, an initial training in a skill and a kit of equipment to set them up once the apprenticeship is over. As I walked through the camp a crowd of curious children grew around me. They wanted to know; who I was, where I was from, what was I doing and most importantly did I have any sweets, biscuits, pens or notebooks.
Trying to take pictures engulfed with forty children is not so easy, so I gave up on that and had fun with the kids in a mix of Swahili, English and French. Turns out laughter in kiSwahili is Kicheko.

Kibumba is a displaced persons camp about forty minutes north of Goma, close to the border with Rwanda. It is built upon the ruins of the camps for Rwandan refugees. The population comes from Rugare about 10km away and as far as Tongo about 40km away. It is managed by the displaced themselves and the UN and NGOs provides services in the camp in agreement with the Committee of the Displaced. UNICEF with NGO partners is running an area for children to play and where we can listen out for any problems children might be having, we are supporting emergency schooling, water points, latrines and psychosocial as well as medical support for rape survivors.

Over the last couple of weeks I see kids everywhere with kites made from plastic bags. They were not there before, I wonder if they learnt this at the child friendly spaces we have set up with partners.

In the centre of Kpandroma a emergency nutrition centre that we had set up with COOPI at the worst of the fighting in 2004 had been turned into a makeshift school catering to the poorer children of the village. We had provided some small support to the school through a local NGO however the results are disappointing and we are reviewing how to do this better.

As part of the reintegration programme for children who had been caught up in armed groups we also try and get kids back into school. In this secondary school, specializing in pedagogy, 5 children had been integrated two years ago. When we visited 4 where still at school and one had stopped. They had integrated back so well that the teachers made no difference between them and any other child and the childrens friends were in general unaware of their past. According to the headmaster 80% of children who graduate find a job, mainly as primary school teachers.
