Spring Creek: Inks Lake State Park - Texas

TURN OUT THE LIGHTS!

Captured with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC lens.

ISO 1600, f/2.8, 30 second exposure.

Camping at Inks Lake State Park in Burnet County, Texas with the Round Rock, TX Cub Scout Pack 562 Airborne Eagle Patrol. Earlier in the day we did a patrol hike to Devil's Water Hole (one of the main attractions of the park). A small tributary called Spring Creek empties into Devil's Water Hole. Just upstream about a 1/4 mile is a small waterfall. I made a mental note; come back tonight to leverage a waxing gibbous 1/2 moon.

It was around 11:45PM as I approached the falls and there were people already there. I wasn't expecting anyone and hoped that they would be on their way out since their lights would interfere with my exposures. As I approached closer one of the two people shined their light on me and asked what I was doing. I said I was just going to take some photos and they both replied..."we are too".

So immediately we exchanged the typical photog jargon etc. They said there were done and getting ready to head out. I took two test exposures as they were heading out. When I was ready for the 3rd exposure, setting up my tripod and camera in about 3 feet of water, I noticed the ambient light level go up considerably. When I turned back to see where it was coming from I noticed the two photogs up on the trail along with another person and this person was wearing a BIG TEXAS cowboy hat. I could see the two photogs handing the ranger their ID's and immediately I thought I better get a few more snaps off before that Ranger comes down to ask for my ID because I didn't have my ID with me :)

This was the best shot because of that Rangers lantern. The lantern was far enough away (about 50 yards) that it really helped light the falls. There are other frames I captured w/o the lantern light but I really think this one stands out the best.

Inspired by Denis Smith "biskitboy", I attempted a "Ball of Light" in the middle of the falls. Needless to say, I could use some practice; however, I would wager to say that even Denis might be challenged by uneven algae covered rock with swift moving water. I'm shocked that I didn't fall whilst turning around in circles.

I moved a little closer into the falls for this frame. I was so beautiful under the stars. I could have stayed all night, but I had to get back to camp with my boys :)

Round Rock, Texas Cub Scout Pack 562 Webelo I Airborne Eagle Patrol works on Naturalist requirements 2 and 11. Mr. Dakus Geeslin, an aquatic scientist from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality leads the boys at Brushy Creek. Special thanks to Mr. Geeslin for taking time from his personal schedule to instruct and Mr. Mark Layne for coordinating the event.
