As if mixed together on an artist's palette, the colorful aurora of the far north will frequently leave observers in awe at displays like this one. Monday's beautiful display was no exception. Equipment: Canon 7D, Sigma 10--20 mm.

A Photographer's Dream

And it really was! Unfortunately, though, this one, belonging to the same set as the previous image, caught me unaware and happened so quickly that I just didn't have the time to expose properly. Sorry about the burnt out stretch here. I kept snapping as quickly as I could, but the camera took its time in between images. If, for instance, I used 20 seconds on an exposure, the camera would process the individual image for another 20 seconds! This meant that many shots just were not possible. The photographer, Bent (to the left), was having a field day as well.

Beyond Earthly Bonds

Last evening was just exceptional in this part of northern Norway. I headed off in my car after having looked at the local aurora warnings which indicated that things could be fairly good for watching the northern lights. And, to my surpise, I managed to witness a light show that hardly has been matched this past season. From the coast in Ersfjordbotn, Norway.

I would have loved to throw out newer images of the northern lights here, but the weather hasn't been of much help lately. Clouds, wind and snow only keep me inside, I'm afraid. Enjoy another image from one of the times I was out and about in late January.

I have never, ever experienced anything comparable to what I did last night. After waiting for the northern lights to come out for some time, I was on the verge of calling it a day, when suddenly I was treated to an aurora show beyond expectations. Things were just wild, and I ended up staying outside until 2 AM. This image shows what could be seen when looking directly over head. More to come.

Finally, after weeks of waiting, the aurora returned to the skies of northern Norway yesterday. And although aurora forecasts didn't seem to promise too much, observers were treated to a spectacular show in the late evening hours. The best thing to do is to head off towards the sea or local lakes when conditions are ideal, this in order to capture colorful reflections of the northern lights. I was a little too late for that, however, and had to settle on climbing the hill behind my house once again. Next time, I'll be waiting!

The weather has been hampering images of this kind for several weeks now. And when things have improved, I just haven't had much energy to head out. It takes some stamina, after all, having to wade through several feet of snow just to snap some photos! Ah, well. April is just around the corner, and the late evenings are becoming increasingly lighter as we approach the summer solstice in the northern hempisphere. New opportunities may be seen just ahead.

Bright curtains of light descend upon frozen winter woods far to the north in the Arctic. Although captured a couple of weeks ago, this image shows how great cascades of green light easily fall across northern skies when magnetic storms are at their best.

Images like these - with enormous swirling and colorful bands of light - are stunning to observe on cold winter nights. And nothing pleases me more than to stop in my tracks and open my mind to the spectacle occuring far above me. Hearing nothing but the hard packed snow under my boots, as I photographed one image after another, I felt quite simply alone in the universe.

To Unknown Lands

This, and the previous image, were both taken within only a few seconds of each other. Looking north, along the coast, I was able to see the aurora stretch its mighty light far across the Norwegian Sea. You can't help but feeling humble in moments like these. Tromso, Norway

Sometimes I feel in utter awe when I witness the beauty of a colorful mid-winter aurora like this one. There are so few things in nature that can compare to the great bands of red and green light that shimmer across the northern sky, changing hues and intensity in the course of mere seconds. And, underneath such wonders, we live our short lives seemingly oblivious to all.
