umm, looking for other photos for work-related reasons, but this reminds me of those brilliant "tilt-shift" photography photos come across recently via boingboing.com. but, this is just a real scene taken from the top level of the state library of victoria.

'cure sleepiness right away' device is "especially suitable for long-distance driving, drunk driving and night driving" had to buy it ! the back how to use instructions are: "Before long-distance driving, drunk driving or night driving, put the "Cure Sleepiness Right Away" on the right ear or the left ear and, at the same time, move the switch to the location of "ON" and the "Cure Sleepiness Right Away" will begin to work.." what a mouthful... in case you havent guessed its basically a tilt sensor. engrish or just plain crazy?

IIRC its a FLED... Which is of course short for "Flashing Light Emitting Diode" I have reused this a lot on breadboarded stuff, and I often lament its now wonky, crusty legs, though in a photo they look much more awkward (what a word!) - elegant in the nicest sense. whatever.

There is a certain design of solar powered garden night lights that can be pulled apart and re-assembled to look like these cute retro ufo's. The shorter ufo has the white led replaced with a circle of smaller colored led's that circle the underneath of the craft. 'Bubble Tops' are half a 'christmas ball' thing you can buy from craft shops.

This cost us like 60 dollars Australian, but the mechanics are beautiful. Solar powered plant 'flaps' in daylight. Havent pulled it apart but the motion suggests some sort of 'magbot' design

Old "Hard Hat Harry" lcd game converted to solar (and turned into a bug creature, doesnt make much sense except I wanted to keep the control pads and the pcb's were 'wing shaped'). Solar panel ripped from a cheap solar calculator, game runs continually in 'demo mode' during daylight.

Fairly standard beam symnet designs (2) using a FLED solar engine (symnet taken from the great Junkbots book) larger symnet needed more capacitors. Google for "Beam" and "Mark Tilden" if you are confused what these little guys are...

Flashing LED solar engine connected to walkman motor and gears. Last gear hooked up to counter from an old skipping rope. Technic parts for base, Styrofoam balls and other bits of Junk. Not finished but got too ugly!

Two standard sound effect toys 'bent' by inclusion of light dependant resistors. Housing is mostly a pulled apart hard-drive, speaker housings are egg cups. Musical instrument turned on by magnetic reed switch activated by moving the "turntable arm".
