Swan with nest

A pair of swans have built their nest very very close to a busy road.... not very sensible. They are obviously used to traffic/folks with cameras as I got fairly close to them. I hope that when the cygnets hatch that they manage to get them onto nearby drain.

One of the locals.

Well known character in Kings Lynn town centre where he strums his broken guitar & sings unintelligably. He never seems to collect many coins, so I usually leave him some loose change.

The 'indoor scarecrow' has been firmly fixed to the wall. It is just inside the door of a long abandonned & derelict house. I wondered if someone had put it there to frighten anyone who enters.... it certainly did the trick with my dog, who refused to go inside....

Thursford Castle

Walsingham Union Workhouse was built in 1836. It was intended to accommodate 250 people. It became known as Thursford Castle.

In the 1930's after the closure of the workhouse, the buildings became a Smallpox Hospital. The Civil Defence used the premises in the 1950's. In 1961 planning consent was given for conversion to 35 flats, this didn't happen.

Only the overgrown outer walls remain & the dilapidated Workhouse Chapel (in my other photo)

Thursford Castle is situated in an isolated location about a mile from Gt. Snoring in Norfolk along a narrow & winding country road. I was here for about an hour taking photographs & exploring (on my own apart from my dog)

Raynham Hall

Situated in beautiful parkland & close to St. Mary's Church at East Raynham in Norfolk. Building of the Hall began in 1619 & has been the home of the Townshend family for almost 400 years. It also has a famous ghost known as the Brown Lady.

In 1713 Lord Townshend married Dorothy Walpole; she died of smallpox in 1726. But it is rumoured she did not die in that year & the funeral was a mock interment. She is said to have been locked up by her husband in the Hall and her ghost haunts the oak staircase at twilight.

It is in a beautiful setting with parkland containing large mature trees, a farm & a large lake. There is a circular walk on land owned by the Hall which I am intending to do. Whilst I was at this location, I saw several barn owls; unfortunately I didnt get a decent shot of any.

St. Mary's Church, East Raynham

The Church stands in the grounds of Raynham Park (with the Hall close-by). It is a beautiful setting with mature trees. An earlier Church was built here, but this Church was rebuilt in 1868.

The Magnificant Manor House

Great example of Tudor architecture, the vast Manor House at East Barsham was built around 1520 from red brick & tile, moulded & carved decoration including royal coats of arms & the distinctive Norfolk twisted chimneys. The Gatehouse stands in front of the main house. It fell into ruin & was restored in 1919 & again in 1938.

Sadly, a sign on the wall says "The Manor is Private Property & is not open to the public". There is also a high gate & brick wall & fencing all the way round. However, not to be deterred, I found a gap in the fence & squeezed the camera through. So the photos are not the best of shots. I'd love to get inside the walls & get some decent shots of this extremely beautiful building.

Raynham Park Railway Station

The railway station was opened in the 19th Century as part of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway main line from the Midlands to the Norfolk coast. It was closed in 1959 along with the rest of the line.

It is situated near Tatterford & Helhoughton in Norfolk.

It has now been restored; the station buildings are a private residence & an old carriage has been added to the former station platform.

I think they have made rather a nice job of the restoration.

17th Century Country House encased in a mid Georgian north front & Queen Anne south facing. Grade II listed building privately owned by Anthony Duckworth Chad, who is a landowner, London business man & a senior Norfolk County Officer. Plus he's also pally with the Royal family.

It is situated near Broomsthorpe & Tatterford in Norfolk.
