Rail Transit of Portland, Oregon

Here's a new transit diagram that I've been working on for a while now - a unified rail transit map for the place I live, Portland, Oregon. Portland is blessed with fantastic public transportation, but I've always felt that the official TriMet system diagram fails to fully show this, even after its recent redesign.The official diagram only shows TriMet's services - the MAX light rail and WES commuter rail - relegating the important Portland Streetcar to a pathetic, unlabelled, light brown squiggle through downtown. As the Streetcar is currently expanding across the Willamette River in the form of the Streetcar Loop, I feel it is even more important to show its full extent and interaction with TriMet's services. As both systems honour each other's fares, there's absolutely no reason not to show both systems on one diagram.

A first attempt at star photography on a brilliantly clear Oregon night near Little Crater Lake. The clarity of the Milky Way simply astounds me. Still a lot to learn, but a promising start!

Small fungi cling to a moss-covered log in Oswald West State Park on the Oregon coast. Snapped on a whim, I really like how the depth of field turned out on this one.

A close up of the pistons on "Peggy", a 42-ton Lima Shay geared steam locomotive on display outside the World Forestry Center in Portland, Oregon. Shay locomotives use vertical, rather than horizontal, pistons that allow far more even power to be delivered to all the wheels of the locomotive. They have a very low top speed, but are capable of pulling enormous loads, even along poorly constructed railroad tracks.

It had been a very wet week preceding our visit to Multnomah Falls, and torrents of water were coming over the falls. I had to be very quick with all my photography, as the amount of spray off the falls was quite remarkable. I think this one turned out quite well, all things considered.

The girders of Portland's Broadway Bridge against a clear blue sky. The paint used is apparently the same colour as the Golden Gate Bridge, but I don't think this bridge has quite the same effect...

Carnage on the Beach

Looking more like a war zone, this is the beach at Manzanita on the Oregon coast. Huge logs, foam and seaweed line the beach from one end to the other as residents pick their way through.

Standing underneath the western approaches to the Fremont Bridge. There are very few complex "spaghetti junctions" in Austraia, so to see so many in a moderately sized city like Portland was somewhat surprising.
