U.S. Routes as a Subway Map

The latest in my series of transit map-style diagrams - this time, of the U.S. Highway system. That's U.S. Routes (like Route 66), not to be confused with the newer Interstate Highway system (I-5, I20, etc.). Without a doubt, this is the most complex map of this type I have attempted.

As always, comments, suggestions and corrections are gratefully accepted.

This is it. My final take on a redesigned Washington, D.C. Metro Map. This is my third major revision of a project that began in February of last year, and won the People's Choice Award in the Greater Greater Washington "Redesign the Metro Map" contest earlier this year. I've taken time away from this diagram to work on a few other projects recently, but the release of Lance Wyman's draft diagram has inspired me to finish an "ultimate" version of my vision of the diagram.

Here's a new transit diagram that I've been working on for a while now - a unified rail transit map for the place I live, Portland, Oregon. Portland is blessed with fantastic public transportation, but I've always felt that the official TriMet system diagram fails to fully show this, even after its recent redesign. The official diagram only shows TriMet's services - the MAX light rail and WES commuter rail - relegating the important Portland Streetcar to a pathetic, unlabelled, light brown squiggle through downtown. As the Streetcar is currently expanding across the Willamette River in the form of the Streetcar Loop, I feel it is even more important to show its full extent and interaction with TriMet's services. As both systems honour each other's fares, there's absolutely no reason not to show both systems on one diagram.

It's been almost two years since I released the first version of my Eisenhower Interstate System in the Style of H.C. Beck's London Underground Diagram, and nothing could have prepared me for the reaction it created. However, in those two years, I've created many more transit-styled diagrams, learning more about the demands of a good transit diagram in the process.

So, I decided to revisit this diagram and fix a few things that were bothering me from the original and apply some new techniques that I've learned along the way. The diagram is now even more London Underground-like, with colours, "station" markers, line thicknesses and curves that more closely match the original. With my growing confidence, there's also a higher level of accuracy, with the I-35 East and West splits in Dallas/Fort Worth and the Twin Cities now shown, as well as correcting the end points of a few routes.

As always, comments are welcome.

Presenting my next transit-styled diagram, this time showing all the high speed train routes that pass through France. This includes the French (SNCF) TGV trains, the Eurostar trains from London, the Thalys services from Belgium and the Netherlands, and some ICE services from Germany that operate in tandem with corresponding TGV services from France.

UPDATE: March 3rd, 2011 - New version of the diagram with a new route added from Melun to Marseille (Don't know how I missed that one!). Routes from Le Havre to Strasbourg and Cherbourg to Dijon were deleted, as these "experimental" lines stopped running in December 2010. Winter services to Evian and Saint-Gervais also added. Finally, the station names have been made a little larger.

Presenting the latest in my series of transit-styled diagrams, the entire Amtrak passenger rail system in the style of a subway map. Surprisingly, I haven't seen another take on this anywhere else on the internet, but I guess it is a fairly monumental undertaking (Good thing I'm the patient type!). Every last station is shown, the result of a lot of research on both Amtrak's official site and Wikipedia. This version has all station names and route information listed.

EDIT: November 26, 2012 - I've updated this map with the latest route and station information. Only minor changes: extended the Downeaster to Brunswick, Maine, added a second Santa Clara station (University) to the Capital Corridor route, a couple of stations dropped off the Keystone service, fixed a few timetabling errors and typos.

EDIT: December 11, 2012: Another update to include the new Northeast Regional service to Norfolk, Virginia.

Metro Diagram Redesign" />

If there's one thing I love, it's a good Metro/Subway/Underground map. Some of them are design classics and really shouldn't be messed with (London especially). Others have flaws, but are mostly tolerable (Boston not naming all stations on the Green Line really annoys me, but the rest of the diagram is quite well done).

And then there are the diagrams that I simply can't abide.

And, at the moment, foremost amongst those is that of the Washington, DC Metro system. I know that it's one of the most comprehensive mass-transit systems in the US. And I know that some love its broad, brightly-coloured route lines and overly-large station dots, both of which do lend sort of a child-like simplicity to the system, but I'm not one of them.

Eisenhower Interstate System in the style of H.C. Beck's London Underground Diagram

Cameron Booth posted a photo:

Why are you looking at this old thing? Check out the newer, updated, better version here.

Elsewhere on the internet, there are other diagrams that are all highly simplified versions of America's Interstate system, and all are very interesting if not 100% accurate. However, despite being called "subway style" maps by many people who have found them, they actually bear little resemblance to the best examples of that genre. Typically, a good metro map (or diagram, to be more correct, as they are rarely geographically accurate enough to be a true map) uses colour coding of lines and a clear hierarchy of detail to present a lot of information very concisely and clearly.

So that's what I have set out to do. Drawing my cues from the original and best metro diagram, H.C. Beck's wonderful London Underground diagram, I have rendered the Interstate system in a much simpler form. I have made the "major" highways (those divisible by 5) the framework of the map, with the "minor" highways reduced in importance and rendered as thinner grey lines. Even with these highways, a difference in the greys indicates whether they are even-numbered (west-east) or odd-numbered (north-south). Dots on the highways indicate interchanges: large dots where major highways meet other major highways, smaller dots where major meets minor and tiny dots where minor highways begin or end. A full key at the bottom indicates clearly where each highway begins and ends.

Historical Passenger Rail of Portland, Oregon (1912, 1943 and 2015)

Cameron Booth posted a photo:

Somewhat related to my previous diagram, here’s a new transit map of Portland for your perusal. This piece was born out of two things – a friendly after-work chat with the immensely talented Ryan Sullivan of Paste In Place, where we discussed a concept similar to this; and a chance discovery of a high-resolution scan of a 1943 streetcar/trolley map on the amazing Vintage Oregon site.

Based on that map, and information gleaned from too many other sources to mention, I have created a map that compares the passenger rail network of Portland (streetcar, interurban train, light rail and long-distance passenger trains) from three different eras – 1912, 1943, and 2015, when the Portland-Milwaukie MAX line will be completed.

This version is a more abstract version, showing only the coloured route lines with no extraneous markings or text.

First print sample of my Interstate Diagram poster came in today. This one is from an online on-demand printer - I love the size (36" x 24"), and the colors look great as well, nice and bright! I could even make the type a little bit smaller at this reproduction size, which could neaten things up a bit. Still waiting on a couple of different printers before I make a final decision on which way to go.

Prints are now available by visiting: cambooth.net/interstatemap/

A hypothetical redesign of Portland, Oregon's MAX light rail route map as it may appear in 2009 when the Green Line to Clackamas is completed. The current system map is not a particularly elegant piece of design, so I set myself the challenge of making it more attractive and easier to read while still retaining all the information as currently displayed.
