Early detection and rapid response are two major factors in controlling the spread of invasive species. Basically, find those invasives fast so they can be treated before they take over. Here, Debbie Boyd, records information for subsequent monitoring efforts.

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuar: Education and Outreach Specialist

Philip graduated in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in archaeology with emphasis on maritime archaeology from Saint Mary's College of California. He has dedicated himself to the ocean and freshwater bodies, in both archaeological and ecological pursuits. He is excited to be serving at Thunder Bay and inspiring others to cherish and protect our maritime history.

Little Traverse Conservancy: Stewardship Technician

Ben graduated from the Michigan Technological University in 2010 with a degree in environmental engineering. Since graduation, he has worked with the City of Petoskey parks and recreation department and the Charlevoix public library. He enjoys the outdoors through activities such as mountain bike races, kayaking, swimming and backpacking through various areas of the U.P.

Dan Sikarskie (left) and Ned Caveney (right) both have a long history conserving natural resources in Michigan. Sikarskie worked for the USDA for many years and Caveney is a retired DNR forester. Both brought their expertise to the event and continued to support conservation through their volunteer efforts. Thank you!

Luzerne Trail Camp

The Luzerne Trail Camp is south of Luzerne and is a hiking and horse riding trail. Maintained primarily by the Michigan Trail Riders Association, the Luzerne Trail camp features beautiful stands of oak and maple and offers a variety of wildlife for hikers and horseback riders.

Garlic Mustard

The 2nd year growth was in bloom on June 2. Volunteers looked for those white flowers and distinct seed pods. Garlic mustard is a biennial herb introduced from Europe for medical purposes and use in cooking. It produces hundreds of seeds per plant and is allelopathic, meaning the plant releases a biochemical detrimental to other plants. It’s now widely distributed throughout the Midwest.

Because the US Forest Service responded quickly to the report of garlic mustard in the campground, the plants hadn’t yet established a firm grip on the forest floor. Volunteers peered low to the ground looking for any garlic mustard growth.

King began her AmeriCorps service in early May on the Huron Pines invasive species removal team. She’ll be inventoring, monitoring and removing key nonnative problem species in Northeast Michigan including purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), buckthorn (Rhamnus spp.) and phragmites (Phragmites australis).Learn more about AmeriCorps at www.huronpinesamericorps.org

Huron Pines and Ogemaw Conservation District: Rifle River Field Technician

Michael earned a Bachelor of Science from Western Michigan University in April 2009. His focus was teaching earth science and biology. Through volunteering with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, he now hopes to gain more experience in working in the natural resource field.

Alexander holds a Bachelor of Arts in the Program in the Environment from the University of Michigan. He has studied at the UM Biological Station and taken field courses in their Ecology & Evolutionary Biology department. Huron Pines: Invasive Species Field Technician

Emily was raised on the West Coast and has moved around quite a bit. She initially went to college in Sacramento, but later transferred to Central Michigan University where she received a Bachelor’s degree in biology and Spanish. Emily has a great passion for the outdoors and enjoys hiking, camping, and backpacking. She has traveled throughout Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay.

Most recently, Jakub worked as a research assistant in toxicology for the Department of Fish and Wildlife at Michigan State University. Prior to that, he worked on salmon conservation projects in Oregon. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Western Washington University and enjoys camping, fishing, cycling, and traveling.

Au Sable River Watershed Restoration Committee: River Technician

Lisa was raised in an agricultural-based family and instilled with a strong appreciation for the land and wildlife of Michigan. Lisa is a 2011 graduate of North Central Community College where she obtained an Associate of Science degree and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry. In the summer of 2009, she studied on Beaver Island at North Central Michigan University’s Biological Research Station.

Huron Pines: Invasive Species Field Technician

Ross graduated from Northern Michigan University in April 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical geography. He studied abroad in Germany in 2009 and spend the following summer in a remote field site in Alaska where he was a site monitor for the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association. Ross hopes to utilize these experiences to help conserve natural resources in the northeast region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, where he grew up as a child.
