I often pass this fire hydrant on my way to and from work in downtown Reykjavik. Yesterday I had my camera with me and took this snapshot.

Rowan (sorbus aucuparia) is a common tree in Iceland and one of the few indigenous ones. This one in downtown Reykjavik had a nice batch of exceptionally red berries.

Látrabjarg is the westernmost part of Iceland, situated in the Westfjords peninsula in NW Iceland. It hosts millions of birds and is Europe's largest bird cliff. Mt. Snæfellsjökull can be seen in the far distance in the upper right corner.

Dynjandi is over 100 m in height. Had some trouble with water spray when standing this close, but I managed to get this shot before the lens was completely covered in water droplets (didn't have anything with me to wipe it clean). All the later shots were pretty much useless :)

Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in the Westfjords, a large and mountainous peninsula in northwestern Iceland. Dynjandi (could be translated as "thunderous") is located in Arnafjörður and is very impressive indeed.

Went hiking this morning on Mt. Esja, the "town mountain" of Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. It was quite cold and windy, but a nice outing nonetheless. My destination can be seen top left, the cliffs of Thverfellshorn.

An old fisherman's hut in Hafnarfjörður in SW Iceland. Huts like this are used to dry fish, therefore the "open" construction of the walls.

The days are slowly getting longer, today the sun rose at 10:47 here in the southern part of Iceland. This was taken just before noon at lake Vífilstaðavatn, a favorite jogging spot not far from my home.

The shortest day

Winter solstice occurs today and here in the northern hemisphere this is the shortest day of the year. In Iceland sunrise was at 11:22 and sunset at 15:30, so our "day" was only just over four hours long! The good news is that now the days will start to get longer again :)

An old run-down boat house on the banks of the frozen river Bugða, near lake Elliðavatn in SW Iceland. That's the full moon in the sky, an approaching snow storm makes it a bit fuzzy. The sky was clear a minute before, when I was setting up the shot :)

Lake Elliðavatn is starting to freeze over, maybe we can soon bring our skates out there and have some winter fun :)
