Copyright © 2011 - All rights reserved - This marvelous example of classic Russian Siberian Baroque architecture from the 18th Century is now the German/Russian house located in downtown Tomsk, Siberia. Amazing. This would be my second choice for a home design if I were building one in the USA. I LOVE the turret and its intricate, ornate multiple peak adornments. Yes, this was once a SINGLE family home!! There are many other examples of this unique architecture in my Tomsk/Seversk set from our tour of Siberia.

This is an small example of the area where they ate and slept, and spent time off duty. Even given it is spartan and from the very early 20th century, it's really decent facilities. In the back right you see what are called "sling hammocks" where the crewmen slept. They were designed and hung in such a manner seaman could sleep fairly well even in the worse of rough seas conditions. Even with the ship tossing about heavily, they remained relatively calm and horizontal. My father actually slept in one of them for about two weeks at the beginning of WWII on his way to Pearl Harbor just before the Japanese attack...Yes, papa was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

Copyright © 2011 - All rights reserved - The round cylindrical object in the center of this photo at the top of the pole with a ladder going up it is what is called "the crow's nest." This is where seamen kept visual watch for anything of importance at sea. My father was a highly decorated 31 year career U.S. Naval officer and papa would have loved to see this grand old ship. As he began his career as a seaman and moved up thru the ranks steadily, he was one of the men who would have been up in the "crow's nest" at one time as part of his duty watches when he was a seaman.

As a photo artist, I grabbed this capture because of recognizing the "crow's nest." I was instantly intrigued by the black and white construction values, the unique artistic relationships between all the cylindrical shapes, the very powerful, strong and compelling perspectives of the hard metallic elements, the interaction of the lines, and the immediate foreground contrast of the smoke stack deck grating. My wife asked me about the photo afterwards, and given my explanation, she said she really thought it was a very interesting artistic capture.

Copyright © 2011 - All rights reserved - This is but one of many mosques from the ancient times of the Tatars and the Muslim population of Russia. This old mosque is one of the nicest we have seen. The tile work is exquisite. I was informed by my British friend, Philip Larmett who lived in St. Petersburg for two years, that this mosque, located at the north end of Troistky bridge is really not that old: the whole district (Petrograsdkaya) was built only about 120 years ago.

Philip said, "There used to be a huge Trinity church on the open square in front of the mosque, but that was dynamited by the communists in the 1930's, like so many gems. The bridge has got its name back even if the church has not been rebuilt: it was called Kirovskiy, after the famous communist leader in Leningrad who was murdered in the early 1930's, the incident which provoked, or started Stalin's purges."

I tried to capture the superb tiling in the main entry here, but the very bad lighting from the weather made it difficult without using the fill flash. I also had to use the deep telephoto lens since we were at a great distance, and it didn't allow for good detail. Alina and I have seen many mosques in our travels throughout all of Eastern Europe and now many more on this journey. Of them, this is unquestionably the most impressive and a true tribute to the "Allah" of the Tartar Muslim people
