Earlier this summer Vinod said he couldn't swim a lap in the pool without freaking out. The lake swim in this race was half a mile long, and he totally rocked it. Not bad, eh? (on black)

The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run was held on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Runners start at Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe, climb up over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and then make their way over to the finish in Auburn. They have 30 hours to complete the run. The temperatures rose over 100 degrees F and only 238 of 399 starters finished the race. This guy ended up coming in somewhere in the top 5.

My friend Sharley is part of the Forward Motion racing club (triathlons, running, etc.) in Walnut Creek, CA. They volunteered to staff the mile 85 aid station at Auburn Lakes Trails near the town of Cool, in the western foothills of the Sierras, and I tagged along.

The first runner came through around 7PM and the last came through at 7AM the next morning. In between we assisted about 250 racers. My job as "greeter" (after taking photos of the first few runners while there was still light) was to direct runners to the med tent where they were weighed and evaluated, to take and fill water bottles, and to just be supportive and encouraging in general.

Although I enjoy this kind of thing, 100 rugged trail miles seems beyond my distance limit, and 100 degrees is certainly WAY above my temperature tolerance. So perhaps a pre-emptive unlikely to the would-I-ever-do-this question :o)

In a most pleasant surprise, I won the Gunstock winter triathlon short course race today! True, that young punk (& my friend) Ryan Kelly won the long course in about the same amount of time, but still... I haven't come in first in a long, long time, and it felt pretty darn good :o) Anyway, this is me with a goofy grin at the awards afterwards, taken by a friend.

The course was a hilly, 4K trail run on snow, a very tough 3.5K mountain bike route on snow, and a 3K XC ski loop. With fairly soft snow conditions, the bike part was terrifically hard, and I took one fall on the first hill where my front tire sunk in the snow and I pitched over the handlebars and the bike landed ON me. It was hard for everyone though, and while it all sounds pretty absurd (which it was) it really was absurdly fun!

a girl who presumably lived inside said "I won't ask" as she walked inside (me being the random dude taking photos of her building's lights at night). but she smiled a little as she said it which I thought was kind of nice.
