Antelope Valley poppies 2003

Judy & Paul posted a photo:

California

From Carol Leigh's 'Wildflower Hotsheet" -

Right now I've ceased distributing "where-to-go" wildflower information. Private property is being destroyed. Flowers are being trampled. Rude and inconsiderate behavior abounds.

I may change my mind before next season, but for the time being, I no longer wish to participate (however good my intentions) in what I'm observing and hearing about in wildflower locations throughout California.

I have been providing wildflower "where-to" information since 1996, making it easier for folks to see glorious vistas they otherwise wouldn't know about. I am sad to see this come to an end.

It's been a good run. Thank you for having been a part of it. And thank you to all the incredibly generous people who have supplied me with wildflower information for more than a decade.

Please walk gently on this earth. Please respect private property. Please stay on the designated trails. Please do not trample, walk on, roll around in, picnic on, or wallow about in the wildflower fields. Your inadvertently inconsiderate actions today affect years of future wildflower blooms.

Carol Leigh
March 30, 2010

PS. I want to thank everybody who has sent me an e-mail regarding my decision. 85% of those writing completely understand — they're sad, but they understand. 14.5% say they understand but maybe I can use this Wildflower Hotsheet to help educate those who are visiting the wildflower locations to act more responsibly. And then 0.5% of the e-mails want me to bring the Wildflower Hotsheet back RIGHT NOW.

If you'd like to hear my short interview with National Public Radio, here's the link: www.scpr.org/news/2010/04/08/wildflower-tipster-pulls-plu... Click the audio "play" button in the upper left corner.

Thank you, too, for expressing to me how much the Wildflower Hotsheet has meant to you, introducing you to some pretty spectacular wildflower scenery. I'm sad, but I am proud of what I've done over the past 15 years. — April 8, 2010

Disappearing

We received the email below from Richard Dickey today. He's made some of the most beautiful photos we've seen of the masses of wildflowers in southern California. They can be viewed at his website "feral flowers".
www.feralflowers.com/front.html

THE LAST FLORAL BLOOMS: SOMETHING TO SEE, WHILE THEY ARE STILL THERE

For decades I’ve been photographing the ephemeral floral blooms of Southern California. This is a world class natural phenomenon that is unique on the planet for its scale, variety and intensity of the blooms observed over the centuries. Alarmingly, biologists have documented a dramatic reduction of these blooms throughout the state within the last fifty years. Due to urban sprawl, agriculture, over grazing, dams, roads and invasive plant species from around the globe, California’s native plants are in a rapid retreat and possibly the last of these great floral blooms will disappear within our generation.

In the recent winter 2009 Fremontia – Journal of the California Native Plant Society, there was published an article I’ve written about the western Antelope Valley and the habitat here - where the some of the last great floral blooms remain but are threatened due to the possible commercial development of the Tejon Ranch and adjacent Gorman Hills. For anyone interested in learning more of this endangered wilderness and its unique habitat and climate, I recommend reading the article titled “The Last Floral Blooms: Something To See While They Are Still There”.

As the introduction written by Editor Bart O’Brien eloquently states, “Thoreau’s faith in seed is demonstrably California’s reality year after year in the western Antelope Valley and in the Gorman Hills. Nature’s faith that billions of seeds containing the brilliance of innumerable springs to come will be permitted to stay in place to grow and regenerate themselves for the future’s ever changing spring kaleidoscope of colors and patterns that we Californian’s have enjoyed in this particular area since the days of the Gold Rush. Such faith will be tested by politics and developers, but we must not fail in our efforts to conserve the best of California.”

The article has been published in the Fremontia magazine print copy but also is available online at the CNPS website on their conservations and actions page under Tejon Ranch at this link: www.cnps.org/cnps/conservation/actions.php this is a 2.9Mb PDF file.

Please share with those you believe would have interest in learning more about the Tejon and Gorman area.

Thank you,

Richard Dickey

p.s. I apologize for the distracting watermarks on the images, but It’s a proactive necessity in this digital age.
