Reflecting on the Menu

At Disneyworld (in Epcot's Japan) at the Hibachi restaurant, I snuck this photo of a young couple as they sat down at the hibachi grill across from us and began to go through the menu. When i took the picture, I was unaware how well the highly polished Hibachi grill was going to pick up their reflection, but when I saw how well it had come out, I immediately fell in love with the shot.

Part of the reason the shot is composed the way it is because light level was very low, so I needed to set my camera down to get it stabilized. Had light level been better, I probably would have had the camera at eye level and missed out on the cool reflection all together.

Cake Cutting

Did a job again with two other photographers (My mother and Chris Phistry). Recently we've done this a few times, and so we've fallen into certain planned roles. My mom (as owner of the studio) does most of the client relations, posing, and establishing shots. Chris does a lot of the workhorse flash photography, including the quick-posed couples, candids and such.

While this is going on, I concentrate on available light photography and "artsy-fartsy" stuff. Basically I try to find interesting things to photograph, or interesting ways to photograph the standard stuff. So at the cake cutting I decided to see what I could pull off with my wide angle lens.

This charming lesbian couple had either just recently fallen in love, or were playing a lively round of what (in certain nerd circles) they call "Freaking the Mundanes" or possibly "Bug the Muggles". I bet the gay/bi community has their own name for it.

Regardless, I noticed them a couple of times during Taste of Madison, and they were being very sweet and lovey-dovey.

These are my good friends Laura and Tim Gates. I took this candid on one of our trips to the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Tim and Laura also host an annual New Years Eve Party, which I've been attending for years and would not casually miss. This year was no exception, and we all had a great time, in no small part due to their generosity as hosts.
