Winter has arrived here in Montana. And it has arrived in full force. A week or so ago there were parts of Montana that saw temperatures drop to -40. It doesn't matter much if it was Celsius or Fahrenheit since the temperature is the same in both scales. And to any man or beast, it is just damn cold in any scale.

Cold is the enemy of every living (and non-living) thing here in Montana. Deer and antelope, for example, herd together in the frigid cold. And while they then must compete for food, shared body heat becomes the order of the day. Birds of every local species also congregate on the road because it is often the only place not covered by snow. I find myself driving about 10 MPH slower because it becomes much harder dodging them in the winter.

As for humans, we are wrapped up in our swaddling clothing, falling into single files, and expeditiously to where ever it is we are going. In the cold, bears seem to be the only intelligent animal; they hibernate through it all.

The cold, however, does provide wonderful opportunities for a photographer. Frost covered trees chief among them. Now if north central Montana only had more trees.

Here one also gets to witness snowflakes on even clearest days. But it isn't really snow at all. At moments like this the cold squeezes any last remaining moisture from the sky and then gravity pulls it down to earth in the form of a small, white crystal. And when that happens, you know it's damn cold.

Steve (the cat) remains oblivious to the frigid temperatures outdoors. He just knows he can't go outside and laments this benevolent edict of mine every chance he gets. I'm used to him becoming very whiny during the winter season, but by the middle of January he usually gets over it and forgets why he wanted to go outside in the first place.

As for me, I just bundle up...try to stay warm...pack an emergency kit wherever I do...start the truck about 30 minutes early...and pray I don't get stuck or break down in the more desolate parts of Montana. Which when compared to back east...is just about everywhere.
