Bleeding Orange

An abstract image I created of flowing wheat in a field north of Belt, Montana.

The most important ingredients in abstract art are: form, color and lines. All of these ingredients, when combined, can create stunning compositions, and ultimately fine art. If all these elements are used well, then that art will communicate a memorable visual meaning to those who see it.

I am a fan of abstract art. My favorite abstract artists include American painter Mark Rothko and Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. If you know either of these artists you might see some of their influence in my photographs. If you don't see it, just squint real hard.

This particular image is much more Rothko than it is Sugimoto, but I do have a goal of creating something somewhere in between. Before accomplishing that I must first learn how to master two very different elements. Then I plan on incorporating them both into one image. This particular style of photography, which I have used to create a few different images lately might be considered "abstract expressionism." Doing so, though, might be over thinking what I hope to accomplish.

The ultimate goal is merely to create art. And once I accomplish that, the final coup de grâce will be if I can use subtle traces of this technique in everyday imagery.

We'll see what happens.

Torsion & Tension

"Spring is not a season in Montana; it is a series of events that occur throughout the year."

I overheard someone say that a few weeks back after I took this photograph on what was one of the more spring-like days in Havre, Montana.

It took a long time for spring to arrive in Montana, but when it did, it did so with gusto. While my friends and family back home had already experienced spring, and moved immediately on to summer, I was still driving through snow and using the heater at night in Havre, Montana. Hills were still brown and the cold air blowing in the from the north draped much of Havre.

Finally, after many, many months, the winds shifted and spring arrived. With it, so too came the rains.

The average rainfall in Havre, Montana is only 11 inches; barely one inch more than what would be considered a desert. This year, however, rain has been plentiful. Reservoirs, large and small, which are used to hold the rain for irrigation and human/animal consumption, are full to the brim. As such, the hills and valleys are a bright, bright green and wildflowers abound.

Spring in Montana is a beautiful time of year...and lucky for me, it really does happen throughout the year. Last week I saw highs in the 60s. This week it will be in the mid-90s. Next week, I'm told, it will fall to the 40s again as a cold front moves through. That's the fickle nature of weather here in Havre. The hard part is getting used to the change. The best part, is also getting used to the change.

Crevice

A tree pops its head over the horizon somewhere on the open prairie west of Kremlin, Montana.

I'm not used to wildly changing landscapes. Back home we just had hills. Sure, there were parts of Wisconsin that were flatter than others, but for the most part, the terrain didn't change much.

Here in Montana, however, the landscape is as fickle as the weather. When you drive down a random, lonesome highway you will pass through mountains. The next minute you will pass through smooth, gentle foothills. And the next minute you experience land that is as flat as glass. I guess that's one reason I like Montana so much...there is so much variety.

I took this photograph when I was waiting for a train to pass by. I couldn't have been in a more flat portion of Montana. As I waited to photograph that passing train it began to feel as though I was standing in the same exact spot where Tom Hanks was in the final scene in the movie "Castaway." Yes, it was that flat...and empty (except for all the mosquitoes).

As I waited to take my picture I was reminded that as a photographer, inspiration can rise up from even the most mundane places. One just needs to open his or her mind and scour the landscape for opportunities. As I was standing there waiting for my ever elusive train to pass by I spotted this tree poking its head over the horizon. What a wonderful sight, I thought.

So I photographed it.

Slope

A patchwork of a sloping fields outside of Gildford, Montana.

The relatively flat fields of eastern Montana lend themselves well to the creation of wonderful abstract images. I love following the lines of the strip crops in these parts and watch them intersect over some distant horizon. One part Rothko, one part Hiroshi Sugimoto...I enjoy creating images such as this. I don't know why.

Don't ask me why, but my eyes find the blending of lines and colors, and the absence of everything else, very pleasing.
