Harlowton Mob

A large herd of sheep grazing near Harlowton, Montana and the Crazy Mountains.

Charles M. Bair came to Montana as a lowly conductor on the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883, but left a very rich man. He made a fortune in the gold rush and another tidy sum investing in oil and real estate, but none of that would have been possible had it not been for one thing...sheep.

Widely regarded as one of the most successful sheep ranchers in the world, Bair owned more than 300,000 of them--more sheep than Montana had people.

I spoke to an older fella in White Sulphur Springs who worked on Bair's ranch many years ago. He said Bair was a proud man and a legend in these parts. Someone once asked Mr. Bair how much land he owned. Unbelievably, Bair wasn't exactly sure but said, "Every section from White Sulphur Springs to Harlowton; and every other section from there to Judith Gap."

To put that into perspective: A section is one square mile and 640 acres in size. On a typically swift Montana highway it would take you well over an hour to drive from one end of Bair's ranch to the other. And at the height of his success, Bair's operation controlled nearly 90% of all the rail traffic that left Harlowton, Montana.

One day, while loading sheep in Harlowton Mr. Bair bumped into a man who was frantically trying to lease an available rail car to transport his own sheep to market. Unfortunately, the caboose had already been attached to the end of a line of 100 or more rail cars; all of which were plum full with Bair's sheep headed east. Bair, however, went out of his way to help the kind man and instructed his employees to unhitch the caboose, attach another railroad car, and put the caboose back in place at the end.

Once the train left the station and his sheep were headed safely to market he thanked Mr. Bair for his generosity. During the conversation the man asked Mr. Bair how many sheep he owned. Once again, Mr. Bair didn't have a clue. "I'm not sure," Bair said, "How many sheep do you own?" The man, a proud sheep rancher himself, stuck out his chest and proudly said, "2000!" To which Mr. Bair quickly replied, "Son, I own more sheep dogs than you have sheep."

Mr. Bair died in 1943, and with his passing so too did the people of south central Montana witness the passing of the glory days on the Bair Ranch. And though Bair is long gone, his legacy lives on as many Montanans to this very day raise a great many sheep in a place Bair once called home.

Montana Quarter Horse

A beautiful, spirited horse trotting across the grassy Montana plains near Havre, Montana.

I absolutely loved this horse.

When I first approached him to take this photograph he was far off in the distance. As soon as he caught a glimpse of me, though, he slowly moved toward me until he was finally looking at me square in the face. About a foot taller than me (or a couple of hands as the case may be), he just stared and snorted just a bit. I think he expected me to pull a carrot or something out of my pocket. Unfortunately I had none.

I rubbed his nose a little and suddenly remembered why people love horses so much.

Next time I pass this way I will need to remember to bring a carrot.

Golden Prairie

The sunlight was brilliant this morning. This animal stood all alone on the open prairie silhouetted against the morning sun while the dew on the grass sparkled. It was such a wonderful Montana scene.

Sorrel Crest

A sorrel horse on the Mitchell Ranch outside of Cleveland, Montana.

Horses are a very common things here in Montana. Everywhere you look there are horses. Majestic creatures, I now understand why horse lovers have such an attachment to them. The domesticated ones, in particular, seem to share the personality of their owners. And wild horses seem to have a personality all of their own.

This particular horse was shot on the Mitchell Ranch south of Chinook, Montana. I'm just beginning to understand horse nomenclature, and as such I understand this to be a sorrel horse, which is distinguished by this orangish brown coat of hair.

I will return to the Mitchell Ranch in the weeks and months ahead and continue to photograph as much of this beautiful ranch and people as I can. I'm sure I will have a few more opportunities to photograph some horses, too.

Big R, a Montana farm and hardware store, is a very popular place in Havre, Montana. They sell cowboy boots, hardware, jeans, gardening supplies, fishing gear, and much to my surprise, ducklings and baby chickens. Needless to say, they are the most popular item at the store, if for no other reason, just to take a look at them.

This one, looking up at me, caught my eye. I obviously caught his, too.

It is getting harder and harder to find cows grazing in a green pasture in Wisconsin. This scene was found outside of Monticello, Wisconsin.

Dairy cows are such an important part of Wisconsin's history.
