1964 Huffaker Genie Mk 10

liquid in plastic posted a photo:

This car was one of only six MK 10s designed and built by Joe Huffaker. I shot a 4 page spread in Bonhams Automotive August 2012 issue #1793, pages 108-111. (This shot didn't actually make the spread)

Strobist/details:

Nikon D300s, Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8

The photo was lit with a single Elinchrom Ranger RX and a 39" octobank. I held the octobank directly above the car at a slight angle (pointing towards the visble side of the car). I took multiple photos, moving down the car with the light. The lit photos were later combined to achieve the look of a single large light source.

Another Take on the Subaru

liquid in plastic posted a photo:

This was a shoot that almost didn’t happen. I nearly canceled due to the “boring” forecasted weather. The subject: a 1998 Subaru Impreza RS. My plan was to emphasize the rally heritage of the car by doing some off-road rig and posed shots in the snow. The bumpy, snow-covered road presented some new challenges and the bright, sunny conditions made it difficult to get an exposure long enough to blur the ground, but problems aside, the shoot went very well. Fielding and I scouted, planned out the lighting and angles and shot everything within just a few hours. Thanks to fellow photographer Mark Rauh and his son Austin for providing the car.

The Shooting process (similar to my other rig shots):

1. Scout out a location (or three)
2. Place the sun and figure out shooting angles
3. Set up the rig and camera
4. Light the car in a static position
5. Do plenty of rolling frames
6. Repeat if necessary
7. Later, in post, the rig is removed and the lit frames are blended with the rolling frames

I used a Nikon D3 and a Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 lens. To achieve a longer exposure in the extremely bright conditions, a 10 stop ND filter was used. The lighting consisted of an Elinchrom Ranger RX 1100 w/s and a White Lightning Zeus 1200 w/s to combat the sun.

2007 Mercedes AMG E63

liquid in plastic posted a photo:

Much thanks to Paul who provided the car and was a big help, as well as fellow photographers Val Lemieux and Anthony Segarra who assisted, lit, scouted, and froze their butts off!

Final specs: Nikon D3, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, F/11, ISO 500, 0.8 sec

Strobist: The car was lit in a stationary position using multiple exposures and a single Elinchrom ranger head at the max sync speed to eliminate ambient light (black background with the car lit).
So far, Reno hasn't had much of a fire season compared to previous years. Last night, while scouting out some new night photo locations, we came upon this sight. After managed to find a dirt road with a great vantage point, we exposed for about an hour as the hill became engulfed in flames. Eventually the paved road below was blocked off and we saw the authorities shooing away onlookers so we cut our exposures and left.

Tech specs:
Nikon D3, Nikon 17-35mm, 55 frames @ 1 min each, stacked for just under an hour exposure. ISO 640, f/8.

After driving for over an hour and staying out until SUPER-LATE-THIRTY, I failed to get a decent star-trails photo of Eagle Falls at Lake Tahoe. I had this arch in mind as a backup shot and I think it came out pretty decent.

Specs:
Nikon D3, Nikon 17-55mm. The overall exposure is 91 minutes and is built from 13 images at 7 minutes each. I used such long stacking frames to achieve a deep depth of field (F/10). The ISO was 800

Foreground was painted using a tungsten torch.

Strobist: Nikon D3, 35-70mm 2.8. 1/125th at F/13, ISO 200. I stopped down so much to get some nice diffraction spikes from the sun. WB was set to overcast for a bit more warmth. I decided to leave the lens flare to add to the “bright” feel. For the main light, I used an Elinchrom Ranger AS with an A head shooting at full power through a varistar brolly box to camera left. The wind can be thanked for the newly dented varistar :(
Paul, night bouldering

liquid in plastic posted a photo:

Here's one from a late AM night of bouldering with Paul near Carson City, NV.

The shoot was a little disorganized, we showed up in the dark, the batteries were dead on our spotlight, I had never been to the spot before and Paul had only climbed there once. On top of that, it was ridiculously windy and the stands blew over a few times.

Strobist:
2x Nikon Sb-800s with CTO gels to freeze the climber (sort of), 1 LED flashlight (red gelled) to paint in the rock and background. Photoshopped out the SBs. The white balance was set to tungsen and the final exposure was 8 seconds, f/4, ISO 1000 (to pull in the stars) and the speedlights set to rear sync.

There's a bit of motion blur from his leg moving, but it's not bad.

By the way, just after this shot, the rock broke and since someone had moved the crash pad out of the shot, Paul hit pretty hard, but still landed on his feet.
Paul, night bouldering

Here is another attempt at a rig shot of a friend's nice 370Z. Looking back, I wish that the car was turning to the right so I could see the wheel better, but I'm still experimenting with the car stuff. Criticism and feedback welcome...

Strobist: The shot was achieved using a homemade rig. The car is lit with a single, bare White lightning zeuss, to provide some fill and eliminate reflections. That esposure is combined with the "rolling" exposure for the final image.
Specs: Nikon D3, Nikon 17-35mm 2.8, f/4 at ISO 640. 16 frames stacked at 4 mins each = 1 hour total exposure. I lit the “track” from underneath using a gelled flashlight. It was EXTREMELY dark (new moon) hence the wide aperture, long exposures and high ISO.

The Old Hanger

liquid in plastic posted a photo:

I know it's been a while, but I sort of forgot I had a flickr account until Flickr kindly reminded me that my pro account is about to expire. I'm not sure if I'll renew it or not.

The photo:
According to some tourist information center, USA Today rated the middle-of-nowhere, rural town of Tonopah, NV as the #1 Stargazing destination in America.

What better place for some star-trails. This is an old hanger that will probably collapse soon. Multiple people warned us about going inside, but it was too cool to pass up. I actually had to cut my exposure short because the wind was scaring the heck out of me.

Specs: Nikon D3, Nikon 17-35mm @ f/5.6, roughly 1 hour stacked, interior lit with red gels, full moon (PITA)

Explored
