I spent a little while today introducing 'shell scripting' (new to Linux? Look here: freeos.com/guides/lsst/ ) and this picture came to mind. One of the things about the heavy erosion that my coast suffers (up to 2m per year) is the constant exposure of new rock. I saw this one a few months ago, and liked the look of it. And yes, the sand is almost black =]

Wherever I travel, I carry one or two books. I recently added an electronic book reader to my bag - it allows me to carry a complete library, and uses the same charger as my phone.
I chose a Kobo as it has a nice light built into it, I can change the typeface to one that I have loaded, and I am not tied into any single online store or file-format.
A thick paper-back will stop a 9mm round from a pistol; I am not so sure about my Kobo!

Here is a screenshot of my computer desktop. I have run one version or another of Linux since 1995, although it was not until 2008 that I abandoned MS Windows altogether - mainly because I was tired of the constant nightmares posed by computer malware, but also because I just didn't need it any more.

There is a temptation to go with leading, bleeding-edge software developments: this can be fun, but is also fraught with risk of software no longer 'seeing' your hardware when a package is updated.

So - here is CentOS with a Gnome desktop: nothing radical and maybe looks a bit old, but it just works. And works. And works.

The good thing is that it is completely, legally, free of charge. Every package installed is open-source: no need to install 'hooky' copies of anything.

My main computer is a dual-core ThinkPad that I retrieved from a scrap bin. Nothing flash and nothing that some epoxy resin, super glue and a wee bit of solder couldn't fix. The glue was the most expensive part of the project.

I can synch my iPod with it, and my bone inductor ear-phones work a treat. Even my Wacom tablet worked as soon as I plugged it in; same with my scanner.

Of course, I don't play many games on this thing: it's for writing, and sometimes editing a picture or two. However, Steam for Linux is available and more and more games are being ported to Linux.

Enough - if you are looking for software to load onto a reclaimed PC and are on a budget, or if you are just curious, then you might find this interesting.

Just search for CentOS desktop =]

A real editing fail, but I liked the stones. I made this the other day - I made lots, actually - and it was deeply satisfying. The bottom stone is about the size of a rugby ball.

I made this the other day for the first time. It might not look especially attractive but I assure you that it wasn't bad! You need to make a Yorkshire pudding batter, and put to one side. Bake some sausages in a dish for 10 mins at 220 degC - I used venison, instead of pork or beef. Then pour over your batter, and return to the oven for another 20 minutes. The batter rises, so the sausages (no, not real toads!) appear to be in holes. I served with gravy and peas, with some tomato ketchup. Pure comfort food =]

This is *part* of a whiteboard that I saw in an office recently. The creator told me that he had put it together after attending several completely unrelated meetings that all used the same cliche-ridden management gobbledegook. He found that this 'map' was able to summarise any and all meetings that he ever went to. Having studied it, I find it to be equally useful. I just thought I would send it up a flagpole into the blue so you can kick it around the park for a bit. Enjoy =]
