Nymph of the Mountains

Matthew Crowley Photography posted a photo:

The official symbol for Glacier National Park, the Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is not a member of the Capra or Goat family but is actually in the family of Bovidae which includes Antelope, Cattle and Buffalo.

It is difficult to tell the males and females apart as they both have beards, short tails and long black horns, but males ("Billies") typically have a longer beard, are about 10-30% larger than females ("Nannies"), Billies also have a much more gradual curve in their horns than Nannies, which is much more sharp of a curve near the end.

Based on all of that, I would say this one is a Nanny.

Day 6

The shore of Moraine Lake was littered with fallen trees and stones that seemed to be arranged as if they were in someone's zen garden. The beauty of the shore combined with the reflection, the emerald color of the water, and the Ten Peaks looming in the background, all over 10,000 feet, made for one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.

Day 6
We took an early morning stroll down the shore of Moraine Lake to the far side. The clarity of the water combined with the reflection was out of this world. It was so peaceful and we did not see another person the entire walk.

Day 6
Yoho National Park - British Columbia, Canada

Takakkaw Falls is the tallest unbroken waterfall in Canada and is truly one of the most impressive things to see in person. The sound is so deafening and the spray travels so far. It is easily over 1200 feet tall, making it the second tallest, overall, waterfall in Canada, and was very awe inspiring.

"Takakkaw" is the Cree word for "it is magnificent" and I don't think they could have picked a better word to describe this falls.

It was cloudy the majority of the time we were there, except for the shot above where the sun broke through for just a few minutes to add some lighting and warmth to the surrounding rock and trees.

Glacier National Park, Montana

The Garden Wall, seen on the right, is a saw-toothed jagged mountain wall carved out by adjacent glaciers on either side. Only a thin ridge remains. The Garden Wall divides most of the park in half with the Many Glacier part completely on the other side of the Garden Wall.

This entire valley up to almost the very top ridge of the mountains was once filled with a giant glacier 3,000-4,000 feet wide.
Canoes On The Prettiest Lake In The World

Matthew Crowley Photography posted a photo:

Day 6

Moraine Lake (The Valley of the Ten Peaks)

This valley is crowned by ten peaks, every one of which is over 10,000 feet tall. It is one of the most impressive sights I have ever seen. The suspended rock flour in the water and the protection of the lake from the wind by these massive peaks aid in making some of the most stunning reflections you could ever see!

We got up extra early to get here for sunrise. It definitely did not disappoint!

One thing I wish we would have had time to do while we were there was to canoe in this unbelievable place. Would probably be one of the most peaceful things we could have ever done. Guess we'll just have to make it a reason to go back before too long.

Day 7

The last time I had visited Tangle Falls I was 13 years old visiting with my parents. I remember it being a really beautiful falls, but we had gone in June or early July, so there would have been more melt-water flowing through it. I was actually a little disappointed in it this time, but that could also be related to the fact that we were totally burnt out by this time and this is literally the last place we stopped before turning around and heading back to Banff.

Still as far as falls go, it's definitely pretty, I just remember it roaring a bit more than it was.
Glacier National Park - Reynolds Mountain From Logan Pass

Day 3

One of my favorite mountains in Glacier National Park, Reynolds Mountain is a glacial horn, meaning it has been carved out on more than 2 sides by a glacier to form a pyramid shape peak. I don't think any picture can convey really just how big it is to see in person. It also greets you from either valley below; St. Mary Lake or Lake McDonald.

It's one of the crown jewels of Glacier National Park standing at 9175 feet high and ready to greet anyone traveling over Logan Pass.

Day 3

The sun set on our first full day in Glacier National Park and it was quite a beautiful sight in the St. Mary region. The mountains glowed with the warm evening light and was definitely worth stopping and taking in a view that I don't normally get to see.

Beargrass Above Grinnell Lake

Day 4

The U-shaped Grinnell Valley is due to 1000s of years of erosion caused by a moving glacier. The glacier was formed in a glacial cirque high above the valley and each year, the new snow, then melting would push the glacier deeper into the valley. Along the way it would leave impressions in the ground that were later filled with glacial meltwater to form the lakes we see today; Grinnell Lake (center) and Lake Josephine (to the upper left of Grinnell Lake).

This is also the only place in the park that we found beargrass (the white furry plant) that was still alive and flourishing as it was pretty late in the season for it.

Day 6

The largest lake in Yoho National Park, Emerald Lake is truly a beautiful place with stunning reflections and beautiful rock "flour" stained waters. It was the only lake that we had time to visit during our time in Yoho National Park and it was definitely worth the stop.
