4x5 Polaroid - B&W

In black and white... tried to get the hair to show a little.

First shot in my first ever studio! I had a total blast this week setting it all up and so much fun taking the first images. Fortunately a friend of mine was willing to stop by with another friend and let me take their portraits!

This awesome shot was taken with the Sinar P1 4x5 view camera and a 210mm Rodenstock lens. Shot at f8, the camera was placed a good 6 - 12 inches higher then the model, shooting down and the rear movement was tilted at about 20 degrees. Dark grey background faded out to near black.

Unfortunately I did not have enough light on the hair to bring out the highlights. I only had 30 minutes to shoot, and I was switching formats (4x5 film, to polaroid to 6x6 with the Hasselblad and Leica), and I actually forgot I took this Polaroid and 15 minutes later opened it up thinking it would be dead, but it turned out great! But yes, the shoot was over and unfortunately could not make the adjustments to the light in the hair.

Looking forward to many more exciting photography and new growth in the newly christened studio!

Coffee Roaster

I took this photo today of my brother standing near one of our Probat coffee roasters. My family has been roasting coffee now for over 25 years! Its a fun business that takes us all over the world in search of good coffee. Luckly, I get to bring a camera everywhere we go!!

This shot was taken with a Speed Graphic Pacemaker 4x5 large format camera and the infamous & amazing Kodak Aero Ektar f/2.3 barrel lens. It is an extremely fast lens producing a crazy shallow depth of field!

I used Fuji instant film on this shot.

These guys were taking jumps on their bikes... in their minds they were getting 5 feet of air!! They were feeling cool... as you can see in this photo. Love it.

Ok, this was most certainly one of the coolest guys in Soho!!! I saw him and just freaked knew I had to get him to let me take his photo. He was with a bunch of his buddies and I didn't know how cool he would be with some other dude coming up and saying I want to take your photo. But no worries. Thanks Tysean... this is one of my favourite all time portraits!!!

Left all the dust & scratches... thought it added to the authenticity of the shot! No need to clean it up in my mind.

Ok.... WHY have I not been shooting a LOT more transparency film!!!!!!! This stuff is freaked awesome! Just looking at the film on a light table is satisfying.

I am liking the bokeh on this shot, it falls off quick and very nice to my taste. Almost has a large format kind of feel... I need to start using this damn camera more, love the lenses.

Just trying to compose the shot - a little harder because it is upside down and backwards. Made a little easier due to the AMAZING Arca Swiss C1 geared tripod head. Seriously, that head is incredible.

You can see all 3 heads I used in this simple shot. Main light is camera left - a 36" tall (or is it 48") soft box with Elincrom 600 head. Right above I have a smaller soft box and Elincorm 400 head on this amazing 60 year old 80 pound vintage light-boom. And in the mirror against the wall you can see another Elincrom 400 head with a honeycomb mesh located about 8 feet behind model and obviously behind her head shining right at the camera.

We are also using a little fan just to get the hair moving... surprising how much difference it made to have the hair moving around versus just laying there flat and "dead".

Shooting with Sinar P1 4x5 large format view camera - shooting both instant film & black and white negative film.

Ok... so I totally overdid the tilt-shift! It is kind of like the first time I got Lightroom and totally overdid the pre-set adjustments! Lots of experimentation and playing around, but actually, none of it was looked good now that I look back at the mess. LESS IS MORE. And that goes for tilt-shift too I think. This was shot at f/8 and I don't really know how deep the depth of field is when shooting 210mm large format. This might have been good tilt shift at f/16?

But, even though it is too extreme for my liking, I don't mind the shot.

I love this about London... pubs after work! I just love how so many people get together and visit like this. In Canada, everyone just seems to get in their cars - goes home - drives right into their double garage and disappears until it starts all over again the next day.

This guy saw my Rolleiflex, but because I don't have to lift the camera to my face... it didn't occur to him I was taking his photo! I find it so hard to be discrete when doing street photography... even with the infamously "inconspicuous" Leica rangefinder. But with a TLR camera... people always look at the cool camera, but never know I am capturing the shot.

I love the monochrome look to this shot!! Soho NYC.

I don't know why I don't pull this cool old camera out more often. Taken with a Speed Graphic 4x5 large format camera... and I think it was with my 178mm f/2.5 Kodak Aero Ektar lens? Got a little tilt shift going on...and unfrotuantly I was too high and cut off their feet. How the hell did I miss that. None the less, I like the old world charm of this shot. Little buddies out back "Taking Shots".... its so Canadian.

This was a 6x6 image which I reluctantly cropped, but I thought it really helped to bring more focus to the cool street scene happening on a beautiful sunny day in Soho district of London.

Brings back memories! Brothers outside practicing their slap shots!

Taken with my old Speed Graphic Pacemaker 4x5 and a decent Schneider - Xenar 150mm f/5.6 lens to replace the original Graflex lens that came on the camera. Too bad I didn't take an extra second to focus properly!!! But trust me, these two were already complaining that it took 25 seconds to take this one!!
