1930's Brown Check Jacket & Waistcoat

Here's a pretty classic looking 30's suit in a not-overly-amazing brown check fabric. Wide notch lapels, double-pleated patch pockets and a super-nipped waist. While the fabric isn't too crazy, this jacket is one of my favorites because the back is insane. It's got four strips of fabric down the middle of the back that form five vertical pleats over the back belt. Any subtle flex while wearing the suit opens up the pleats and makes this jacket breath like shark gills. It's gaudy, but kinda cool!

1930's Tweed Sport Jacket

It's my favorite garment - it's sporty, but there's a certain humility to it. Undated, and the only label is a monogram (A.T.) I bought it from a seller in the Chicago area. Notch lapels, triple-pleated patch pockets and belted back with a center pleat in the back; buttons appear to be Bakelite. Paired here with a 1930's shirt by Pilgrim, a 1930's tie also by Pilgrim, and if you look closely, you'll notice a small lapel pin from the 1939 NY World's Fair and a matching collar bar with an itty-bitty, teeny-tiny Trylon and Perisphere on each end.

A WIP. Something I'm building for something. I still need to give him a little body.

I normally do a search of whatever I'm building to see if it's been built before, and it's surprising how few Oceanic models there are.

Here's an earnest, but kinda spooty attempt to build Norbert and Daggett in minifigure form.

The Angry Beavers has always been a favorite of mine, second behind Rocko's Modern Life. The show definitely had the best theme song (so Herb Alpert) and the dialogue was brilliant. Definitely some of the best voice work in any Nickelodeon cartoon.

That Nesquik torso always reminded me of Norbert's nightshirt, which he wore frequently on the show. That's what sparked this endeavor.

I took about 30 minutes and modified the limo from 10232 Palace Cinema to go with my own copy of the set. It's inspired by the 1941 Cadillac.

Again, I used the base of the car that comes with Palace Cinema and added a bit more chrome to it, covered the rear wheel wells, gave it a hardtop and angled the windscreen using minifig pistols (a technique that never made it to the final set.)

Here's something else from well over a year ago I haven't posted. Obviously, directly inspired by the venerable Iain Heath (Ochre Jelly).
Mine's just a quick doodle of a model - I just wanted to give him a big, cheesy grin (no pun intended) and minifigure hands on his paws (which you can't actually see in this photo.)

Something from the teens/20's. Boardwalk Empire/Great Gatsby style, since the 20's are en vogue. I built this automobile nearly two years ago and never posted it. It has rolling wheels, a completely detailed undercarriage and can seat two complete minifigures comfortably.

Save for the auxiliary tire sticking from the side, this car is exactly 5 studs wide.

I built a duplicate hardtop version in dark red, too.

I was stoked with all the great teaster trailers and tuned into Bates Motel on A&E. I wish it wasn't so modern... and that it was truer to the Hitchcock adaptation. But it was ok.

I found these owls at an antique store in New Bedford several years ago and had to have them for obvious reasons. Judging by their construction, condition and some of the aparatuses internally which are now visible from the outside if you part their feathers in just the right places, I'd date these to the late 19th/very early 20th century. The big one's a tawny, though I'm not sure what the little guy is. Looks like a little great horned, with his feathery "eyebrows", but I don't think that's what he is.

His bright yellow eyes follow you, though. VERY scary. They so remind me of Norman Bates' screeching owl from the 1960 film. Wish I could get my paws on more taxidermy owls, but the legality of owning modern mounts is ambiguous.

10232 Palace Cinema

Sir Nadroj posted a photo:

My copy of set #10232 Palace Cinema came in last week and since the photos have been officially released by LEGO, I took this picture. I had the pleasure of designing this set with designer Astrid G. who you may know from the designer videos for this set and the Town Hall modular. I designed the overall aesthetic of this set, channeling the spirit of 1930's Hollywood. Astrid served as the set's engineer, the practical one of the two of us responsible for final design decisions and engineering some of the more complex assemblies you'll find in the set.

I thought it might be "cinematic" (no pun intended) to photograph this set with other period-authentic objects, like my Paul Goldman streamlined desk from 1946, my 1942 Remington typewriter, a 1939 Saturn Lamp from the N.Y. World's Fair and my 1930's white cotton suit (with pleated pockets and belted back.) Pretty much the only thing in this shot that is not from the 1930's or 1940's is my pocket square. Hanging on the wall on the left is an original program from December 21, 1937 - the world premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles (speaking of movies.) It hangs over a 1935 Philco Cathedral Radio.

1930's Depression Era Collegiate Suit

Sir Nadroj posted a photo:

I was taking pictures for a Christmas card today and thought I might as well post a picture of myself since I haven't posted anything in a long time.

I've been collecting vintage suits lately, and this one may be may favorite (and by far the rarest in my collection.) It's an early 1930's depression era collegiate suit. These suits were the high-fashion suits of the decade and were only worn by college students and gangsters. The trouser's cuff measures 21" around, which makes them just a couple inches short of Oxford Bags. As seen in this secondary photo of me, the trouser's are severely high-waisted and boast a 2" waistband with three buttons in it. Three buttons in the waistband! They don't make them like that anymore. The tie is 1940's, and the collar bar, although it can't be seen in this photo, is from the 39' N.Y. World's Fair and features a tiny version of the Trylon and Perisphere on each end.

The tree behind me is an early 1960's aluminum tree bearing only ornaments from the 30's and 40's. There is a color wheel behind my right leg not seen in the photo.
