A view in North Pennsylvania Street

Hoosier Recollections posted a photo:

c1910 postcard view of a Polar Ice & Fuel Co. delivery wagon in Indianapolis, Indiana. The scene is on North Pennsylvania Street. The horse-drawn wagon appears to be parked in an alley and the gentleman is preparing to deliver a block of ice. The sun is shining on the home in a manner that indicates it is the south façade. Therefore, the 2½-story home is on the west side of Pennsylvania and on the north side of the alley. The second home to the north also appears to be 2½ stories. The front porches of those homes and the one on the south side of the alley are all aligned. The 1914 Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets for Indianapolis show very few alleys on the west side of Pennsylvania Street between downtown and Fall Creek. The most likely location for this house, based on a review of the Sanborn™ maps, is midway between Eighteenth and Nineteenth Streets. The homes shown in the map set at that location appear to match the homes in this postcard view except that the home on the north side of the alley in the map set is identified as only a 2-story home. Otherwise, the footprint of that home matches the home in the postcard view, including the two-story bump-out on the south façade. The second home north of the alley in the map set is identified as a 2½-story structure and the home south of the alley is shown as a single-story structure. Many of the homes along Pennsylvania Street (as well as Meridian and Talbott Streets) had garages at the backs of the properties. The garages were accessible via alleys that paralleled those streets.

The second paragraph of this memoir talks about ice delivery on North Pennsylvania street in the 1920s,

1913 postcard view of a flooded iron bridge over the East Fork White River at Shoals, Indiana. This was the Fourth Street Bridge that connected Shoals with West Shoals. The view is looking northwest toward west Shoals. The Martin County courthouse could be seen to the left of the bridge when this photograph was taken. The courthouse is located on the northeast corner of Capital and Maple Streets, a few blocks west of the river. The writing on the plaque at the top of the bridge is unclear. However, the finial on the right appears to read PATENTED 1872. The Bridgehunters web site (bridgehunter.com/in/martin/shoals/) has more information about the bridge.

1912 postmarked postcard view of the interurban station at the Logansport Country Club at Logansport, Indiana. This was known as Cass Station on the Fort Wayne & Wabash Valley Traction Co. line. In 1911, this company reorganized and became the Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana Traction Co.

Cass Station was located on the north side of the Wabash River near present day CR 600 E. The 1955 USGS topographic map for Logansport identifies the bridge at that location (east of the Logansport Golf Club) as the Cass Station Bridge. The Cass County Historical Society’s web page says the purpose of this station was to accommodate visitors to the country club. A footbridge was provided from the station to the south side of the river where the country club was located.
The business across the street on the southeast corner was the LOGANSPORT STATE BANK (401 Market Street).

1913 postcard view of flooding in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the Great Flood of 1913. The scene was Central Avenue looking south toward the 30th Street intersection. The flooding was due to Fall Creek overflowing its banks. The creek is about two blocks south of 30th Street. A long line of mostly horse-drawn wagons is moving north along Central Avenue from the worst flooded areas.

1911 postmarked postcard view on Broadway in Union City, Indiana. This view is looking north toward Pearl Street. The Big Four Railroad Depot was behind the photographer. The BRANHAM HOTEL sign identifies the location of the hotel office. A barber’s pole stood at the far end of the block, on the southwest corner of the intersection. The pole was leaning against the building. The 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Union City shows a barbershop on that corner facing Pearl Street (225 Pearl Street). That map set also shows the Union Grand Theatre located west of the alley on the north side of Pearl Street. The theatre entrance was in the center of the building (224 Pearl Street) with a restaurant on the west side of the entrance and a confectionery business on the east side at the alley. On the east side of the alley, the map set shows a harness shop at the alley (218 Pearl Street) and a 5c theatre east of the harness shop (216 Pearl Street). A bank was located on the southeast corner (213 Pearl Street) of the Pearl Street intersection. Just outside of this scene, the map set shows the Indiana Union Traction Co. and the Ohio Electric Traction Co. Depot. The interurban track can be seen coming from the west on Pearl Street and turning south onto Broadway.

The 1901 Sanborn™ map set shows the marquee at the theatre’s entrance; the 1911 map set does not. If the 1911 map is not in error, then this photograph was taken prior to 1911.
Just outside of this scene, the map set shows the Indiana Union Traction Co. and the Ohio Electric Traction Co. Depot. The interurban track can be seen coming from the west on Pearl Street and turning south onto Broadway.

1911 postmarked postcard view on Broadway in Union City, Indiana. This view is looking north toward Pearl Street. The Big Four Railroad Depot was behind the photographer. The pole was leaning against the building. The 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Union City shows a barbershop on that corner facing Pearl Street (225 Pearl Street). That map set also shows the Union Grand Theatre located west of the alley on the north side of Pearl Street.
A view in North Pennsylvania Street section

c1910 postcard view of a Polar Ice & Fuel Co. delivery wagon in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1913 postcard view of Fourth Street in Logansport, Indiana. This view is looking south toward the Market Street intersection and the Pennsylvania (PCC & St L) Railroad Passenger Station in the background at Canal Street. The Wabash River is just beyond the station and this was the Great Flood of 1913. The floodwater appears to be about knee deep. An automobile at the left edge of this scene is steaming because of the high water. The photographer (Oberchain) was probably standing at the entrance to a dry goods store at 323 Market Street when he took this photograph.

The building at the left edge of this scene was on the northeast corner of the Market Street intersection. The sign in the window is only partially visible, but appears to read __AKER __PTICIAN. The 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Logansport shows an optician’s business on the first floor of that building (400 Market Street). The business across the street on the southeast corner was the LOGANSPORT STATE BANK (401 Market Street). The barber’s pole hanging from the façade next door (east of the bank) advertised a barbershop. The Sanborn™ map set shows a barbershop at this location (403 Market Street).
The building at the left edge of this scene was on the northeast corner of the Market Street intersection. The sign in the window is only partially visible, but appears to read __AKER __PTICIAN.
Central Avenue looking south during 1913 flood, Indianapolis, Indiana section 2

1913 postcard view of flooding in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the Great Flood of 1913. The scene was Central Avenue looking south toward the 30th Street intersection. The flooding was due to Fall Creek overflowing its banks. The creek is about two blocks south of 30th Street. A long line of mostly horse-drawn wagons is moving north along Central Avenue from the worst flooded areas.

The NORTH SIDE GARAGE sign advertised AUTO SUPPLIES and REPAIRING. The 1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis shows a garage just north of 30th Street at 3009-3011 Central Avenue. The capacity was 50 cars. Below the sign is a gasoline pump with WAYNE ______ GASOLINE printed on the side. The Sanborn™ map set shows a 500-gallon buried gasoline tank in front of the garage. The pump is probably sitting on top of that tank. Neither the 1909 nor the 1912 R. L. Polk city directories list this garage.

The business on the southwest corner of the intersection was Henry B. McColley’s drugstore. According to the 1912 Polk directory he sold drugs, toilet articles and cigars. Signs on the building advertised CANDY, SODA and COCA COLA.

The building on the northwest corner is listed in the 1912 Polk directory as Aquilina Flats (3004-3010 Central Avenue). The 1912 Sanborn™ map set shows the addresses as 3002-3012 with four retail spaces on the first floor and flats on the second floor. The retail business on the corner (3002 Central Avenue) was Edgar H. Wilson’s drugstore according to the 1912 Polk directory. His business sign advertised COCA COLA. The other retail business that was visible in this scene was the E. E. WADDINGTON GROCERIES AND MEATS store. The 1912 Polk directory listed Elmer E. Waddington’s business address as 3006 Central Avenue.
