Pennsylvania Railroad Depot, Logansport, Indiana

Hoosier Recollections posted a photo:

1912 postmarked postcard view of the Pennsylvania Railroad Passenger Station in Logansport, Indiana. A crowd of passengers was at the station. A train was stopped nearby and a hotel station wagon was parked beside the station at the left. This view was looking east northeast. The structure at the left edge of the postcard was a porch-like extension at the corner of the Island View Hotel (per the 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Logansport). Just beyond the depot in this view was the US Railway Mail Transfer building (the barely visible white façade). Beyond that was the Pennsylvania Railroad YMCA building. The large circular tank farther east was a 100,000 cubic foot gas storage tank owned by Indiana Lighting Co. That tank was located on the south side of Erie Avenue between Oak and Elm Streets.

The nearer of the two steeples in the background probably belonged to the First Presbyterian Church at Spencer and Seventh Streets. A sign below that steeple appears to include the word FRUITS. That building is at least three stories tall. The Sanborn™ map set shows the G. Caruso Fruit & Vegetable Warehouse in a three-story building on the northeast corner at Fifth and Canal Streets. The other steeple (above the right edge of the gas tank) probably belonged to the St. James Lutheran Church at Ninth and Spear Streets. The dome that can be seen just above the train cars probably belonged to the Christian Church located at Ninth and Spear Streets. The chimney to the left of the dome may have been the 70-foot-tall chimney at Obenchain & Boyer Chemical Co. located northwest of Berkley Street on Erie Avenue. The two-story white building that appears straight ahead in this view housed a restaurant and was used for boarding according to the 1911 Sanborn™ map set.

A young man is standing on the tracks near the train. He has a bag over his shoulder. The word STAR is printed on the bag.

The postcard message was written by “Irish” to Miss Ollive Deineger at Donovan, Illinois. “Irish said he was working at this depot. He gives his address as 1210 Erie Avenue. That address was a single-family dwelling southwest of Twelfth Street.

1913 postcard view of the White River Bridge at Gosport, Indiana. The date was March 25, 1913. This was the Great Flood of 1913 and this view is looking southeast.

Farmland was flooded beyond the bridge. The Indianapolis & Vincennes Railroad tracks were under water in the foreground. The lumber at the bottom of this view was stacked beside the railroad. The 1910 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Gosport shows the R. J. Sanders & Sons Sawmill situated along the west side of the railroad and “scattered logs” on the east side of the track. Some debris has been pushed up against the bridge as the river flows south (left to right in this scene) past Gosport.

1912 postmarked postcard view of the interurban station at the Logansport Country Club at Logansport, Indiana. This was known as Cass Station on the Fort Wayne & Wabash Valley Traction Co. line. In 1911, this company reorganized and became the Fort Wayne and Northern Indiana Traction Co.

Cass Station was located on the north side of the Wabash River near present day CR 600 E. The 1955 USGS topographic map for Logansport identifies the bridge at that location (east of the Logansport Golf Club) as the Cass Station Bridge. The Cass County Historical Society’s web page says the purpose of this station was to accommodate visitors to the country club. A footbridge was provided from the station to the south side of the river where the country club was located.

1913 postcard view of Fourth Street in Logansport, Indiana. This view is looking south toward the Market Street intersection and the Pennsylvania (PCC & St L) Railroad Passenger Station in the background at Canal Street. The Wabash River is just beyond the station and this was the Great Flood of 1913. The floodwater appears to be about knee deep. An automobile at the left edge of this scene is steaming because of the high water. The photographer (Oberchain) was probably standing at the entrance to a dry goods store at 323 Market Street when he took this photograph.

The building at the left edge of this scene was on the northeast corner of the Market Street intersection. The sign in the window is only partially visible, but appears to read __AKER __PTICIAN. The 1911 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Logansport shows an optician’s business on the first floor of that building (400 Market Street). The business across the street on the southeast corner was the LOGANSPORT STATE BANK (401 Market Street). The barber’s pole hanging from the façade next door (east of the bank) advertised a barbershop. The Sanborn™ map set shows a barbershop at this location (403 Market Street).

1913 postcard view of flooding in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the Great Flood of 1913. The scene was Central Avenue looking south toward the 30th Street intersection. The flooding was due to Fall Creek overflowing its banks. The creek is about two blocks south of 30th Street. A long line of mostly horse-drawn wagons is moving north along Central Avenue from the worst flooded areas.

The NORTH SIDE GARAGE sign advertised AUTO SUPPLIES and REPAIRING. The 1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Indianapolis shows a garage just north of 30th Street at 3009-3011 Central Avenue. The capacity was 50 cars. Below the sign is a gasoline pump with WAYNE ______ GASOLINE printed on the side. The Sanborn™ map set shows a 500-gallon buried gasoline tank in front of the garage. The pump is probably sitting on top of that tank. Neither the 1909 nor the 1912 R. L. Polk city directories list this garage.

The business on the southwest corner of the intersection was Henry B. McColley’s drugstore. According to the 1912 Polk directory he sold drugs, toilet articles and cigars. Signs on the building advertised CANDY, SODA and COCA COLA.

The building on the northwest corner is listed in the 1912 Polk directory as Aquilina Flats (3004-3010 Central Avenue). The 1912 Sanborn™ map set shows the addresses as 3002-3012 with four retail spaces on the first floor and flats on the second floor. The retail business on the corner (3002 Central Avenue) was Edgar H. Wilson’s drugstore according to the 1912 Polk directory. His business sign advertised COCA COLA. The other retail business that was visible in this scene was the E. E. WADDINGTON GROCERIES AND MEATS store. The 1912 Polk directory listed Elmer E. Waddington’s business address as 3006 Central Avenue.
