Photographed using a Sony NEX 5N with the Industar 28mm f/2.8 lens. Soft FX filter applied in Tiffen DFx to tame lens flair.

Going to the library

I frequently go to the Hesburgh Library at Notre Dame. Here I am on my Jamis Beatnik fixed gear bike. Fellow flicker friend Longbowsnyper was behind the camera.

Photographed using a NIkon D300 with an 18-200 VR lens and a SB-900 flash. The flash was in repeat mode over the 1 sec. duration of the exposure. Post processing with Nikon Capture NX permitted Maximizing the active de-lighting beyond that in the camera firmware. This helped with the brightness of the multiple images.

This photo was part of a joint project with Flickr user Longbowsnyper.

Photographed on the campus of the university of Notre Dame in front of the Hesburgh library looking south toward the football stadium. We used a Nikon D300 with a NIkkor 50mm f/1.8 lens along with a Nikon SB-900 speedlight set for rear curtain sync. The walk in front of the library is dimly lit with incandescant lamps which were above the camera position. This provided the ambient light needed for the trail of the Keirin jersey. This photo was raw processed using Capture NX and the active d-lighting level was maximised in the software.

Cleveland West Breakwater Lighthouse in the distance with a Seagull in motion up close.

The red circle as the lighthouse light is actually the result of the standad Bokeh of the catadiptric or mirror lens. Here is is definitely a feature not a bug.

Detail of the wing roof on Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering at Purdue University. This building was designed by Ratio Architects. The moon is illuminating the passing clouds providing a sense of motion.

Photographed on Fuji Neopan Acros 100 film using a Canon model III rangefinder with a Canon Serenap 50mm f/1.9 lens. Metered with a Sekonic L-758DR. This is a new camera and lens for me. Here, the lens was wide open and I notice it is a bit soft near the edges compared to when stoped down.

A photo of me sprinting around the turn at the Washington Park Velodrome, Kenosha, WI. Longbowsnyper and I were riding the Velodrome on Saturday with a Nikon D300 connected to a Nikon ML-3 remote transmitter. Breaking the IR light beam triggered burst fire on the camera. The exposure was 1/1000 s here. in retrospect, 1/400 would have worked better.

Flicker user Longbowsnyper and I were riding on the Ed Rudolph Velodrome on Saturday. Trying to capture the essence of speed and excitement of riding on on this track was challenging. This shot at 1/60 s does the job. This photo was created using a Nikon D300 with a NIkkor 18-200 VR lens.

This is the Biomedical Science Research Building at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. The building was designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, LLP.

Me on my Jamis Beatnik fixie, photographed by my friend Lonbowsnyper riding through the forrest on his Dawes Fixie. The runner in the background adds to the interest of hte motion blur. We mounted a Nikon D80 to our bikes using a Manfroto Quick Clamp for these shots. Here we used a Nikkor 35mm f/2 lens with a shutter speed of 1/50 in shutter priority mode.

Me and my Jamis Beatnik fixie riding in front of the Hesburgh Library at Notre Dame, as photographed by Flickr friend and fellow fixie rider Longbowsnyper. The incandescent lights under the overhang on the library supplied the ambient light for the light streams, while the flash illuminated my figure.

Photograped on a Nikon D300 with a NIkkor SB-900 flash in rear curtain sync mode. Post processed with Capture NX to maximize Active De-Lighting 1 step beyond the camera firmware. It is best to keep this feature turned on in the camera as the Capture NX can modifiy it if present, but can not as effectively add the effect if not initially sellected on the camera. Further processsed with Tiffen DFx: Nude FX3 filter applied for skin tone control, ND grad applied to reduce intensity of wall at the base of the photo, red grad filter applied left to right at an angle to enhance the streaking.

Passing the stadium

I took this photo of friend and Flickr user Longbowsnyper in front of the Notre Dame Stadium. We liked the interplay of the bikes wiht the lighting on the gates.

Photographed using a NIkon D300 with an 18-200 VR lens and a SB-900 flash. The flash was in repeat mode over the 1 sec. duration of the exposure. Here, I used Capture NX to remove active de-lighting to improve contrast. A ND grad filter was applied in the forground to darken the pavement using Tiffen DFx.

Another team effort with Flickr user Longbowsnyper, this time panning on the Mishawaka River Walk. This location on the south side of the river, just down stream from the suspension bridge over the St. Joseph River has a curve which provides interesting angles and lighting for panning.

Photographed handheld using a Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm VR lens. We have found that best results are obtained in single as opposed to continuous shooting modes.

A view through many rides on the midway at the Berrien County Youth Fair 2009. Somehow this photo reminded me of a linear particle accelerator.

Photographed on Kodak Ektachrome EPY 64T Tungsten balanced film using a Mamiya 645 AF camera. Exposure compensation for center weight metering was set +2EV. Exposure was 8 s at f/16.

NIght rides

Rides (Ferris Wheel and Mary-Go-Round) on the Midway at the Berrien County Youth Fair 2009.

Photographed on Kodak Ektachrome 64 tungsten balance film using a Mamiya 645AF in centre weight meter mode +2 EV. I find that at night, one needs from +1 to +2 ev exposure compensation. The lens was at f/16 and the exposure was for 8 s.

Speed at the fair

It was still light out when I took this shot at the Berrien County Youth Fair, however, I used a Singh Ray Vari-ND variable neutral density filter to significantly increase the exposrue time. What I like about ths photo is the motion blur whcih makes the ride look even faster than it is.

Photographed on Kodak Portra 400NC film using a Mamiya 645AF camera. Center weight metering +1.7 EV. 3 sec. exposure at f/16.

American and Canadian Flags flying by the Blue Water International Bridge in Port Huron, MI.

Photographed with a Nikon D300 using a Nikkor 18-200 VR lens on a tripod for 6 sec. The primary adjustment required here was to increase the black point slightly to improve take out some flair. I also adjusted saturation and brightness.
