Ice on the beach

Ice that has been left behind by the receding tide on one of the black volcanic sand beaches of south Iceland. This is a full colour photo but it's a monotone landscape in big parts of Iceland so it looks like I've converted the shot to b&w.

I was so wrapped up in the beauty of the place that I didn't realise just how much the light was fading. Fortunately the auto-iso feature on my camera rescued this hand held photo by ramping the iso up to 6400. I didn't notice it on my camera lcd at the time and there's very little evidence of noise even when viewed on a large monitor.

The black basalt cliffs and beach at Vik in Iceland contrast nicely with the white surf of the big atlantic waves.

Photographed at dawn from a point further along the headland where a small river that you can see at the bottom of the photo flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

The biggest issue with this photo was trying to hold the tripod down in one place during the 2 minutes that the camera took to take the image - the winds on top of the cliff edge must have been at least 30mph and at one point I nearly lost the camera and tripod over the edge.

In the background in the middle of the photo you can see the flèche or small spire of Notre Dame Cathedral.

Dating from the late medieval period the Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge in Paris.

It's a beautiful bridge and I've photographed it every time that I've been to Paris since getting interested in photography a little over 5 years ago. There's always something that I've loved about it and I remember the fascination with it's form that I felt when I was there in 1985 when it was wrapped in gold fabric by the artists Christo and Jeanne Claude.

The bridge is at it's most beautiful just after dawn when the rising sun catches the warm coloured sandstone and makes it glow.

The tower is part of the Palace of Westminster and was designed in the 1850s by Augustus Pugin.

Hallgrímskirkja, Iceland

Hallgrímskirkja is the main church in Reykjavik and the tallest building in Iceland.

It was designed in 1937 by local architect Guðjón Samúelsson but construction wasn't completed until about 40 years later.

The statue in front of the church was a gift from the USA in 1930 and is of the Icelandic explorer Leif Eriksson - the man now believed to have been the first European to arrive in North America around 500 years before Columbus and for introducing Christianity to Iceland.

For those of you who may be interested in architecture here's a link to another famous church that was designed by Samúelsson, this time in Copenhagen. You can see that he had a very distinctive architectural style:
