Seattle is For the Birds

Easter Sunday was a great day in Seattle. So we headed over to West Seattle to get views of the city. Lucky for me it was low tide and I was able to position the Space Needle in the background of this image of the heron. If it hadn't been low tide I would have been under water.

I always like to sit next to the window on airplanes and keep my camera in hand during take-off and landing, just in case I get a view like this. This was a perfect mix of shadows and textures as the top of Mount Rainier was caught between two layers of clouds.

For the Super Guppy trip to Seattle, I setup right at the end of the runway to try and get a shot of it landing. This one turned out really nice with the trees framing it in.

The Fremont Solstice Parade is really all about the longest day of the year, and the people in Seattle go a bit nuts. But I just loved how I caught this girl in the perfect Fremont moment.

The 80's will never really die, they will simply peek out during special events like the Fremont Solstice Parade. I love this girls cigarette and snarl that she is giving, true 80's rock.

The Fremont Solstice Parade is always a lot of fun to see the paint jobs on the opening riders. This girl is the perfect embodiment of what most of the country thinks of when they think Seattle. She is riding a bike through the city with purple hair and a Nirvana t-shirt.

Went out to shoot the traffic coming/going across the I-90 floating bridge across Lake Washington. I think I want to try this again with more light on the lake so that I can see the lake too.

A Window on the Universe

So I got my hands on a new toy, a small laser projector that connects to the iPad. So I have seen this observatory from the freeway for a while now, and just never figured out a photo for it. Well the two came together in this little image. I wish it had been a bit darker around, but it is what it is. Also because of the sodium lights, most of the color of the image of Saturn was lost.

Wow, look at all those dials. This was one of those photos that just worked in black and white. It was dark inside the cockpit, with bright light outside the plane. And I'm always amazed when I go into the flight deck of a 747 just how tiny the cockpit is compared to how large the plane is.

I'm not sure that this bus needed the sign to let people know it was a good photo spot. But I liked the sign, especially the contrast of the plain sign with crazy bus. I also got lucky on the perfect timing with the kid jumping out just as I took the photo.

This dragonfly had a great color on it, and even in the bright middle of the day sun it still looked good. I really liked the bokeh I got in the background from the water.

The first delivery of the full size Shuttle Simulator was delivered to Seattle over the weekend. And for such a delivery you need a special plane. And the Super Guppy is defiantly a "special" plane. The thing just never looks right, flying or sitting on the ground. This was during the first pass of the airport. I really liked the bit of tree, but I wish we could have had better skies.

First, the Saturday before Christmas Eve is apparently one of the best times to go to the Pacific Science Center, it was dead.

I had to climb one of the retaining walls in the butterfly house, but I loved how this butterfly was nestled into this flower.

I was really happy how this shot came out shooting through 2 panes of glass. This snake was just warming himself under his lamp, all coiled and comfy.

Had a good walk around a cold, but sunny zoo. The penguins where really active after feeding; but my NEX just wasn't fast enough to get focus and catch the birds swimming. I did like this shot of the feet, I got great detail on them.

A nice shot down the space station mockup at the Museum of Flight. It's just a really interesting structure. One of the great design features of space equipment is that there is no orientation.

Inside the City of Everett

The Museum of Flight had a special event, where they opened up the "City of Everett" the first Boeing 747. I've been on a lot of test flight airplanes and it always amazes me how different planes feel without an interior. It's not that this felt that much bigger, it's just a strange feeling when you walk around an open jumbo jet.

I had gone down to the Museum of Flight for the historical miniature gaming festival; but it was very small and not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a bunch of static displays of games, but the best model was the one of the first Boeing factory that is located int eh first factory.

At what point do we all get to ride around in flying cars? But this isn't the future, this is the very crowded main gallery of the Museum of Flight in Seattle. I really liked the effect of the Lensbaby to create a feeling of motion in the photos. Also the bright light outside the windows in the background game the photo more of an infinite feeling.

Odie to the Rescue

Spent Saturday morning walking around the Museum of Flight. And this was the first time I ever noticed Odie sitting in this rescue helicopter. I also decided to shoot with my Lensbaby to help isolate aircraft in the museum, since there is so much, it's tough to get a shot with a good focal point sometimes.
