They are actually hunting for dinner meat while on safari, but get attacked by two lions. Though Finch-Hatton tells Karen to "drop" if there's an attack, she doesn't, and shoots the first lion. Denys shoots the second.

Out_of_Africa-Denys washes Karen's hair while reciting poetry. What a guy!

Apparently, in colonial, white Kenyan society, dropping by unannounced was acceptable (no phones!). And they expected to be fed. Note the Masai tribesman in the background, who travels with Denys. Karen wants to feed him and Denys says not to. "He wouldn't want it." He doesn't say why. There is further discussion about the Masai and Kikuyu, but it's faithful to the way that Karen, Denys and even Berkeley, who lives with a Somali woman, would view the cultures that surround them, through European eyes.

Denys Finch-Hatton drops Karen off after a Safari and their first liaison...doesn't know what to say. In the real life of Karen Blixen, Denys used her house, after she and her husband (Bror Blixen) divorced, as a base for safaris. Though the film portrays Finch-Hatton as her lover, and that's commonly assumed, she never confirmed it in her writings.
