Finally, my jacket muslin is 100% complete and I've made the changes to my pattern pieces and drafted my lining pieces (making slight changes to the bodice/sleeve pieces advised by many sources as opposed to just using the same pieces like my pattern recommends).

I'm ready to cut my fashion fabric / underlining / lining fabrics tonight!!

Fitted cuff... what do you think?

by gum by golly posted a photo:

So my muslin is pretty much complete (yay!). I just posted about it on my blog, but I'm curious if you guys have an opinion on this...

The sleeve cuffs are quite fitted, meaning I would have to unbutton the cuff to get it on/off. It looks like from the pattern picture that it's meant to be that way. What do you think? Does that seem annoying, or should I go with what the original pattern has? I'm leaning towards keeping it that way but keep going back and forth. A couple people suggested I put a hidden snap on the inside but I think it might make the button stick out too far (especially as it's quite big).

For comparison to the left is the cuff of one of my vintage Pendleton 49er jackets, which is a much more roomy style of jacket and the cuffs can slip on/off.

Opinions??

Muslin mockup of jacket so far

by gum by golly posted a photo:

Here's what my muslin looks like so far. (It's on top of a blouse I'm sewing which hasn't been hemmed and would be tucked in, so it makes the jacket look too short but it isn't.)

For some reason I really struggled with the collar piece, which just seemed about 1/4" too long between the shoulders, so I re-drafted it by just folding that out. Seems to have worked, but I don't know why I had that problem.

This is the worst sleeve I've set in, puckers galore! But at least the shape is okay on me (no huge drag lines or anything that bothers me) and obviously I'll take more care on the real project. ;)

I'm also terrible with marking the center front so I'm just guessing at the overlap on the front.

Notes are what's left to go on it... then I'll decide if I'm happy with the fit. So far it fits, just needs another sleeve and the rest to know for sure if it's a hair too small and if the sleeves or body are too long. :)

Muslin mockup of jacket so far

These are the vintage buttons I'm considering using for my project. I woke up in a panic last night when I realized I don't have enough because the sleeves have a button at the cuff, too!

The good news is I think I somehow managed to find the exact same buttons in the past and swapped them out on a pair of Heyday trousers. If I need to, I'll rip 'em off the trousers and use them for my jacket, then find new buttons for the trousers. LOL

(Btw that was the buttonhole twist I ordered but it's way too bright green. Still working on finding a replacement.)

Just got home and my 2nd fabric choice arrived! This is the wool flannel, it's a really dark forest green. It's a little thicker than the tweed and maybe wouldn't need to be underlined.

See my dreamy inspirations from Sears 1945?? My pattern isn't exactly the same (collar area is different obviously) but pretty similar.

Now I can't decide which fabric! lol

first fabric choice-- opinions?

I ordered 2 fabrics to decide between for my jacket. The first just arrived, a navy/tan small herringbone tweed. It's lighter weight than I was thinking but very nice! The other is a forest green wool flannel (that Mood took 7 days to ship, eep) that hasn't arrived yet.

The pattern on the RIGHT is the one I'm doing for Sew for Victory... I figured whichever fabric I don't use for the sew-along I'll use for the patten on the left. (Someday lol)

What do you think?? Can you see the jacket in this tweed? Would it be better with buttons up the front, or a fly front? I'm going to do the collar like the view 1. I'm thinking buttons for the tweed would be better.

It's light enough I think I'd have to underline or interface the entire thing... I'm reading my new tailoring/jacket books to figure out how to even handle that. And not sure how that would have been done in the 40s. ;-) My pattern calls for lining it, and I bought rayon lining which I think will be very appropriate.
