Hawa Maiga, 45, is just one of thousands of people that are currently internally displaced within Mali. She sits patiently with around 100 other men, women and children, at a WFP-organised food distribution site in central Bamako.

Her husband died a few years ago, so she is now the head of a family of 22, including her children, her sister's family and other relatives. Although she can just about manage to pay rent, water and electricity thanks to her late husband's small pension, she would struggle to feed all these mouths as well. UK aid, through the World Food Programme (WFP) is enabling Hawa and thousands more to survive the very real affects brought on by Mali’s conflict.

Hawa comes from Gao, one of Mali’s northern towns that has been acutely affected by conflict in recent times. Even in February this year, violent clashes occurred between rebel fighters and French and Malian forces, making life in Gao unbearable.

“Without food, our family would not survive", says Hawa.

“I really want to return to my home but I cannot. Fighting is continuing, even to this day - it is too dangerous. The protection of my loved ones is my only priority.”

Britain was one of the first countries to respond directly to the recent escalation in violence, and is supporting tried and trusted humanitarian agencies to provide food, urgent medicine and clean water inside Mali, as well as provide a comprehensive package of support to refugees in Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger.
UK warns of humanitarian disaster in South Sudan

International Development Minister Stephen O'Brien meets a mother and her baby receiving medical treatment at a health centre in Jamam, South Sudan. Jamam has become a temporary home to 36,000 people who have fled from their homes due to fighting between Sudanese and South Sudanese forces.

The ‪British Government will provide emergency support to help 100,000 people facing severe food shortages in South Sudan.

Today Stephen O'Brien warned of a looming humanitarian crisis after visiting the volatile border with Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people are already facing hunger due to poor rain, insecurity and an influx of returnees from Sudan.

‪But he stressed that lifesaving emergency British aid is not the long term answer to this avoidable disaster. He urged the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to find a lasting solution. ‪

Stephen O’Brien said:

‪"What I saw at Jamam refugee camp is the very real human suffering of the ongoing problems between Sudan and South Sudan. A devastating combination of conflict and food insecurity is leading to a humanitarian disaster, which we must all do what we can to avert. ‪

‪"We face a crisis on an unimaginable scale if those South Sudanese living north of the border are forced by the Government of Sudan to leave. I want to remind both governments that it is their own people who are suffering as a result of their inaction. ‪

‪"Britain remains committed to helping the poorest people of this troubled region – but our aid budget is not a substitute for a lasting settlement."

During his visit he went to Jamam refugee camp, where 36,000 people are stranded after fleeing the fighting across the border in Sudan’s Blue Nile State. They are among more than 100,000 men, women and children who have been displaced by the violence between the two countries.

South Sudan is also facing a potential economic crisis after halting oil production in January in response to Sudan’s seizure of South Sudanese oil. ‪ ‪

Stephen O'Brien called for an immediate ceasefire and for the two governments to return to negotiations to resolve their remaining differences – including oil revenues, which could provide valuable resources to fund basic services.

Mother support group leader Gladys Nagilai stands among her tomato crop in a greenhouse in Lodwar, northern Kenya. There are 13 mothers in her group. They meet once a month to learn from each other about infant and child nutrition. During their meetings, nutritionists also teach them about infant and child feeding.

The support group members actively train other mothers in the community
about feeding and nutrition. The greenhouse farming project – which is supported by UNICEF and the IOM with funding from the UK – is underway as a means of improving their household food security. Some of the crops are sold and what’s left over is used by the mothers.

Wilson Namtoun, 58, at work crafting a money box which he plans to sell at market. Wilson, who is blind, bought his tools using cash received as part of the hunger safety net programme, an innovative scheme funded by the UK, which is helping 60,000 of the most vulnerable people across northern Kenya to buy food and other essentials.

Having the tools means that Wilson can make a modest living from his carpentry instead of relying on livestock which have been dying in large numbers due to the drought.

The lack of rain this year across the Horn of Africa has resulted in failed crops, lack of water and death of livestock. The Government of Kenya declared the drought a national disaster as 3.5 million people in the country are in need of emergency assistance.

Programmes like the hunger safety net have meant that vulnerable people in the arid lands are able to diversify and survive.

Naomi walked more than 200 miles to reach the hospital in Lodwar, northern Kenya, with her ten-month-old daughter Kinyonga, who was badly malnourished. The hospital has recently been refurbished with British support.

"When I was referred here I was given treatment", she says. "I was given blood and food, and so was my baby. Before admission my child couldn’t eat but now if she sees someone else eating she will eat as well. I am pleased that my child is doing so well."

British aid is feeding more than 2.4 million people such as Naomi, in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa, according to new figures released today.

Three months after famine was declared in Somalia, 13m people are now caught up in the effects of the drought. Lodwar, in Kenya's nothern Turkana county has been badly affected, but UK aid is also providing a long-term Hunger Safety Net programme here, which is helping mitigate the impact of the drought for some 60,000 families.

British aid is reaching vast numbers of people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, including:

1.3 million people who are being vaccinated against measles and 680,00 against polio;

1.2 million people who are being provided with clean water and sanitation equipment such as latrines;

Nearly 500,000 children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers who are receiving supplementary nutritional packages;

400,000 doses of UK-funded anti-malarial medication are currently en route to Somalia; and,

More than 200,000 people who are being given seeds to plant when conditions have improved.

A fishing boat on Lake Turkana, northern Kenya, the longest desert lake in the world which is famous for its crocodile population. Fish from the lake provide a valuable food and income source in times of drought, but the lake is a salt-water one, so the water cannot be used for drinking.

The lack of rain this year across the Horn of Africa has resulted in failed crops, lack of water and death of livestock. The Government of Kenya declared the drought a national disaster as 3.5 million people in the country are in need of emergency assistance.

Aid from the UK, in the form of a long-term 'hunger safety net' programme is encouraging fishing from Lake Turkana as a source of alternative food and income, to mitigate the effects of food shortages caused by the drought.

Nakitela Epur is pictured with her eleven-month-old daughter, Epuu, who is recovering well after being treated for acute malnutrition in the pediatric ward in Lodwar District Hospital, in Kenya's northern Turkana county.

Lodwar hospital has been refurbished with help from the UK. All the children in this ward are being treated for complicated acute malnutrition.

Turkana - one of the poorest regions in Kenya - has been hit hard by the current food crisis. The loss of livestock due to drought has left thousands in need of humanitarian assistance.

Britain was one of the first countries to respond to the crisis. To date, the British public have donated over £72 million to the DEC appeal and more than three million people will benefit from UK-funded humanitarian programmes.

Mother support group leader Gladys Nagilai stands among her tomato crop in a greenhouse in Lodwar, northern Kenya. The crops were planted by a mother support group. There are 13 mothers in the group who meet once a month to learn from each other about infant and child nutrition. During their meetings, nutritionists also teach them about infant and child feeding.

The support group members actively train other mothers in the community about feeding and nutrition. The greenhouse farming project – which is supported by UNICEF and the IOM with funding from the UK – is underway as a means of improving their household food security. Some of the crops are sold and what’s left over is used by the mothers.

Eveline Erupe, 22, with her two daughters who are four and 10 months.

Eveline has brought them to Lodwar District Hospital to the outpatient unit. Here her baby receives a ration of 'plumpy nut', a high-nutrition, peanut-based food supplement.

Levels of acute malnutrition in Turkana county have soared this year due to the unstable food situation and the drought. In July 2011, admissions to hospital for children with severe acute malnutrition were four times the rate of the previous January.

The outpatient unit provides food rations in the form of plumpy nut, made possible through donations from the international community including the UK. The UK is supporting UNICEF to address the problem of malnutrition in the area.

Margaret, a resident of Kataboi Village in Turkana, northern Kenya, is one of 60,000 vulnerable people benefitting from an innovative 'hunger safety net programme', supported by British aid. The programme provides people with small cash transfers each month, to enable them to buy food or start up small businesses.

The drought has claimed the lives of many of this pastoralist community's livestock, which are often their only source of food and income. ”Without water, our livestock are not productive. Nothing can grow,” she says.

Margaret has used her safety net to buy essential supplies, but also to send her daughters to school.
A smart way to adapt to drought and hunger

DFID - UK Department for International Development posted a photo:

Peter Okech, 57, holds his smart card for the Hunger Safety Net Programme outside his home in Napetet, near Lodwar, northern Kenya. The arid northern territory of Turkana has suffered repeatedly from droughts and they are becoming more frequent.

This year’s failed rains have sent the region’s malnutrition rates soaring, and have pushed many into destitution.

Peter’s smart card is proof that he is enrolled on the programme, an initiative funded by the Department for International Development to help vulnerable people affected by the drought to buy food and provisions or to provide a means for them to make a living which doesn’t depend on the land.

Peter and his wife Abigail are now supporting their six children by buying, cooking and selling tilapia fish from the nearby Lake Turkana, the largest, longest saltwater desert lake in the world.
A smart way to adapt to drought and hunger

Extra food for every child under five

DFID - UK Department for International Development posted a photo:

Save the Children have also started a blanket supplementary feeding programme for all under-5-year-old children arriving at Dolo Ado, like this child pictured there recently.

Announcing that aid is reaching Dolo Ado this week, International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said today:

“British aid is getting through to thousands of families as we speak and that help will save lives.

“The swift action that Britain has taken, and the unparalleled generosity of the general public through the DEC appeal has ensured we are getting supplies to people in the hardest to reach places.

“But too many countries have failed to wake-up to the scale of the situation and the response that is needed. It is time for people to step up their response or risk failing thousands of men, women and children who are in need of our help.”
