"I try to adhere to healthy living", says Mr Maybin Mwinga, a 72-year-old farmer living in the village of Waterfalls, Lusaka in Zambia.

Mr Mwinga is playing his part in improving the nutrition of his community by growing micronutrient rich crops like orange maize - developed by UK aid partner HarvestPlus in collaboration with CIMMYT.

"My wife is a medical doctor. We have come to appreciate greatly the development of micronutrient rich crops like orange maize, iron rich beans and orange sweet potato."

"My wife and I will work to educate others about the nutrition benefits of these crops. We're going to participate in seed multiplication to contribute towards widespread dissemination of these crops."

The UK will co-host the Nutrition for Growth event on 8 June to tackle undernutrition, enabling people and nations to prosper.

Beyond the factory gates, the building boom the cement factory is helping to fuel is providing jobs for countless construction workers across Ethiopia.

With investment from the UK, the National Cement Share Company is on track to supply 14% of all the cement being made in Ethiopia. With more cement available, more building work like this new housing site in Addis Ababa can get underway and more jobs are created as a result.

More jobs means more money to go round, and a chance for people to work their own way out of poverty. And with the demand for cement still going up – things are set to get better.

As companies grow, they can afford to pay their workers a better wage. Which is why at the National Cement Share Company, even junior workers can earn around five times the average pay packet.
By supporting profitable business like the cement factory, the UK's development investments are helping Ethiopia to make its own money, with which it can trade beyond its own borders.

The cement factory in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia – backed by British investment – is a 24 hour operation, producing 3,000 tons of cement a day to help meet the demand of the country's building boom.

But this is just beginning. The company behind the factory has plans for the future - hoping to export beyond its borders to become an international enterprise.
Alan Duncan and Valerie Amos discuss aid for Burma

The UK's International Development Minister Alan Duncan meets with the Head of the United Nations' humanitarian agency OCHA, Baroness Valerie Amos (London, 16 May 2013)

The two met following Britain's pledge of emergency food, drinking water and shelter to help people in Rakhine State in western Burma, who have been displaced by ethnic violence and now face additional threats of approaching tropical storms.

Mr Duncan welcomed the United Nations' role in helping the country's government and partners to prepare for the storm season, and called on the UN to continue to work with the Burmese authorities to ensure effective humanitarian support for the Rohingya people in the area.

Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan said:

“Thousands of people displaced by violence in Rakhine State are currently extremely vulnerable. With the first tropical storm of the cyclone season due to hit the area this week, it is imperative that we respond to the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

“British support will not only meet the immediate food, water and medical needs of the displaced, but give people protection from the elements for the future. The plight of the people of Rakhine State must not be ignored.”

Britain’s £4.4m package of emergency assistance for Rakhine State will provide:

• nearly 80,000 people with access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities
• malnourished children aged 0-59 months with treatment for acute malnutrition in rural camps
• and hygiene kits to nearly 40,000 people.

Alan Duncan meets the Head of the United Nations' humanitarian agency Valerie Amos

UK aid staff Sakander (centre) and Debbie (right) were on hand as part of the EU's Election Observation Mission to help monitor the voting process.

Chief Observer Michael Gahler said:
“Election day showed the commitment of the people of Pakistan to democratic governance by overcoming militant violence. We saw a competitive process, with twice as many candidates as there were in 2008. While various aspects of the election process have improved, there were still shortcomings. It is important that the framework for elections is further developed, so that democracy is strengthened.”
