End of a busy day for two of the four fledgling blue jays who live in or near my garden (I've never seen a nest). They've been spending a lot of time in this crepe myrtle tree. There are photos in the comments section of all four of the little ones sitting in pairs in this tree and a photo of a parent blue jay "tucking them in" (or flying in to check on them).

I first thought this was a Carolina chicadee, a resident bird in Central Texas, (fooled by the black head) but when I examined other photos in this series, I discovered the blue patterned wing just barely visible. This one is so fluffy and so cute (regardless what species it is). It isn't old enough to have fear -- I'm sure it saw me below the tree with my camera -- and doesn't fly very well yet, but it certainly knows how to hide itself in the tree leaves. I had a very hard time trying to find an opening in the foliage large enough to get a decent photo of the little sweetie.

The male anoles have a dewlap under the chin which is not noticeable until they "puff it up" and it looks like a strawberry! They do this both as a courting routine and as a territory-protecting action. I'm not sure which was in place when I saw this little fellow, who seemed to be all alone on the wall behind the hibiscus plants. He might have been protesting my encroachment on his territory. I think they are the cutest little things and they're very beneficial in the garden -- they eat mosquitoes and other insects.

Usually it is the brilliant red 'President' that gets all the tropical hibiscus attention in the garden but this season -- at least so far -- this wonderful yellow 'Sunny Wind' is stealing the show. The exposure seems perfect for it. Alas, that perfect exposure is probably because my beloved white oleander tree has never recovered from the record freezes of the 2010-11 winter. I should have cut the poor oleander back close to the ground but I kept hoping it would recover. It is still limping along with no more than a few branches. Sigh . . . .
