Mississippi River Levee Blow Out

Jason Griffith posted a photo:

The levee used to stretch from the land in the foreground to the land in the background.

This now seemingly tranquil part of the Mississippi River levee system was overtopped during the high water in the Mississippi valley earlier this year. Once the Mississippi River water that overfilled this oxbow lake (abandoned Miss. River meander) started flowing it tore the levee material loose and dumped it into the alluvial plain (see outtake). Most of the flooded area was uninhabited farmland. However, a few very unfortunate families lost their homes to the water.

The town of Lake Providence was protected by a newer and much higher levee southwest of the blow out.

I couldn't get far enough away to capture the entire breach in one shot. This is a panoramic composite of four images (my first attempt at photo-stitching, by the way).

My lonely little work truck on what's left of Bunches Bend road. Somewhat ironically, the sky was beautiful that day.
