The execution wall at Auschwitz 1.

The flag flying above the wall is in the colours of the prison uniform (blue and white stripes) with a red inverted triangle, symbolising "political prisoner".

The building to the left has soundproofed wooden cases over the windows. Inside is Dr Mengele's laboratory where he experimented on the prisoners. The soundproofing was to prevent the other prisoners from seeing inside and from hearing the screams of the test subjects. I found myself, perhaps unsurprisingly, close to tears walking round this yard.
