Daffodil Glade - not ready yet

I'm starting to see contacts' posts showing blooming daffodils. Well, as happy as I am to know they're seeing spring flowers blooming, I felt that I had to share what things look like where I live. This is the famous Daffodil Glade at the Morton Arboretum. As you can see, under up to 20 inches of snow, we're not quite there yet. Good news is our thaw has begun today, with temperatures above freezing for something like only the fifth time this year. And they're expected to get even warmer over the coming week. I KNOW that winter isn't nearly finished yet, but that won't keep me from being happy about the warmer days that are here at last. And, soon enough, this glade will be filled with yellow and white daffodils.

"No," said the Maple. "Autumn is passing, but life is not. I am only going to sleep after putting out my little wings, after putting forth my promise of life renewed... my promise of spring... of rebirth and renewal."

Then, with a gentle sigh, Maple went to sleep.

Winter shrugged and blew its cold, cold wind. Winter touched all with its icy fingers. Snow and ice ruled the land.

But the Maple and the seeds, dormant yet vital, remained.... The promise remained.

It's just a flower.

It's just vegetation.
...No. It's living grass surrounding a living trillium. It's sunshine flowing down and casting shadows. It's light play and it's energy. It's a force. It's light and heat from a place that's cold and dead, landing on a place that's nurturing new life, life that quickens and burgeons and thrives and then passes... and then sleeps... and then, miraculously, awakens and lives again.

That's what this is. A promise. A hope. Renewal. Healing.

future bur oaks

I've always had a thing for oak trees (especially ~~white~~ bur oaks) and acorns. Not sure why. They've always been a part of my life here in Illinois. I think maybe that's why.

(2 Sep. 10 - NOTE: I originally thought these were white oak acorns, but have discovered that they are bur oak acorns. White oak acorns's caps don't have the frilly edges.)

Here are the two separate thoughts that came to my mind:

Sprouted in spring,
flowered in summer,
went to seed in fall,
waited through winter….
Dead now, but there is more to come….
