A close up shot of the young male Cheeta at Refuge Decan, in this shot, he was actually purring. Can't say I've ever heard a Cheeta purr before. But I suppose it's better than being chased by one.

As the story from the guide goes, this little guy was rescued from a local Djiboutian Family. The elder woman in the family used to beat the monkey and as a result, he really dislikes African American women. But rumor also goes that this little guy does enjoy a smoke. Pleased to say the folks at Refuge Decan were taking pretty good care of him, or at least much better than what was decribed as earlier in his life.

Lac Asal

A panoramic of a portion of Lac Asal. This is the second saltiest body of water on the planet next to a lake in Russia. The Salinity content of this lake is nearly 10 times that of the ocean. It gets it's salt content because it is the lowest point on the African Continent. The lake is fed by underwater spring from the Gulf of Aden (sea water). Due to the high evaporative effect of the sun and wind, the sea water comes in and is then evaporated leaving massive salt deposits. This area is just a small portion to the Southeast corner of the lake. To the north is a massive salt flat that is mined by the local Asal tribes men as a form of trade. ... And indeed they do trade... As we stopped to see the nearby canyon a few local tribes men were more than eager to donate their wares as they kindly removed a few water bottles from the back of our truck.

Refuge Decan Fauna

Located south of Djibouti City is a wildlife refuge where animals that are rescued from in and around Djibouti City are cared for. This is not like any "zoo" you've seen before. At this refuge, you walk among the Ostriches, are close enough to the Cheetas you could pet them (the guides highly discourage this for good reason). This shot is of some of the local fauna in the Ostrich area.

Just South of Djibouti City you can get a good feel for the desolation of poverty the city feels. There's an expansive stretch of road that connects the Djibouti International Airport with National Highway N2 that contains acres of trees with bags all over them. The local Afar women collect wood and other supplies from this area to carry home in the late evenings.

Moselle Mine

This mine was used to process Sulfur and is located on the property of a rather huge estate. Located near Rolla, Missouri, the mine has filled with water and has a really intriguing red lake as a result. The contrast of colors was simply amazing.

While I may be a little off on my timing, I think this site was used during WWII to process and store nuclear weapon materials. The site has been through a super-fund clean up and is now used for fishing, but the memories of the past still remain.

This was shot at a Bird Sanctuary where Bald Eagles roost during the winter months. Normally this is an open plain but it's also a flood zone for the Mississippi River. Apparently, it flooded and then froze over. Made for an interesting texture shot.

Hernando De Soto Bridge

Also called the "M" Bridge or the "New Bridge" by local residents, this bridge carries I-40 across the Mississippi river and joins Arkansas with Tennessee. Built in 1973, this six lane bridge spans 19,535 feet long.

Laying Pipe

Not exactly sure what these pipes are for, but they were very large. Each pipe was about three feet in diameter and they made for a nice place to set up to catch the sunset. The rust made for some interesting texture. Curious if these pipes run all the way across the Missippi or if they are used for something else.

Harahan Bridge

Built around 1917 during an entirely different era in US History, this cantilevered, truss bridge carries two rail lines across the Mississippi River. Prior to 1950, the bridge also carried two lanes of traffic across a wood planked roadway. This is a shot of the single lane Eastbound roadway.

This small twig was fighting the ice. I loved the solid, textured, and flat ice juxtaposed by the perfforation of the twig.

I love it when I can put good detail out of ice. Seems like a lot of shots of snow and ice are rather flat or boring, but when you can get a good headache trying to make out all the details... then it's not so shabby. ;)
