Still addicted to the macro lens

All my keepers seem to come from my 100mm macro lens, even when I'm not shooting at macro distances. I think I tend to crop tightly after I shoot and with the 100mm I'm already in pretty tight so I don't lose any sharpness from cropping.

I struggled a little with this one as the wind was blowing all the greenery around between exposures. I've tidied it up a bit but it's by no means perfect.

Mystery solved! I can't imagine mine being too pleased with me if I pushed them in the pond. And seeing as my fish seem to think that everything I put in the pond is food for them I don't think they'd fancy the fish nibbling them either!

These autumn months are a great time to go to Monkey World. It's not too cold but it's not as busy as the summer which means it's easier to get a nice spot behind some glass, rather than shooting through a fence which never seems to work for me.

This is Dinda and she really put on a show flying around the place with her blanket usually in tow!

This guy was quite the accommodating little chimp. He just sat in the window and smiled at me as I snapped away.

He was very interested in my lens and tried sticking a beady eye down it at one point. It's a shame the light was so bad because I've got a couple where his face just fills the shot but a slight blurring plus reflections off the glass make them unusable.

Edit : I should also add that this was taken at 1/25th sec. Just goes to show the virtues of image stabilisation!

I recently went flying and got the opportunity to shoot The Needles from the air. It's pretty tricky taking shots from a small cockpit and hard to avoid the reflections in the canopy. A few came out usable, thankfully!

The Red Lily With Freckles The Fish in a Cameo Appearance

I bought this lily last year but sadly it didn't flower. This year it did and I was very surprised to see the flowers were red! By no stretch of the imagination could I ever be considered a competent gardener (land or water) so I was amazed to find that water lilies come in colours other than white. You learn something new every day!

Before we got him he had to have his bottom teeth removed. I think if rabbits aren't fed the correct diet then they don't get to wear down their teeth and they just keep on growing. So they need things like hay which they have to keep chewing over and over.

The result of this is that Tyrell seems to constantly have his tongue stuck out a little bit! Gotta get down low to the floor to see it tho.

Had the day off yesterday so was busy chasing insects around the garden. As any sane man would do. Obviously.

I found these green flies on my lilies and loved the contrast with the yellow. I probably took some macro shots of the flies that are technically better than these yellow lily ones, but I find the colours in the background make these ones more aesthetically pleasing.

I'm starting to appreciate more that it's the whole package which makes a good photo. Even if the background is blurred with smooth, pleasing bokeh it's still important what colour it is, how uniform it is, how busy it looks. Does it distract the viewer or complement the subject?

In this instance I opted for the shot with the background which complements the subject best.

This is one of the few shots I've taken where it's looked great straight out of the camera. Loaded it into Lightroom, had a twiddle and when I was finished.... it looked exactly the same as it did when I started. Oh well! We're good to go then!
