Ten things you can do to improve your photography in 2009:

1. Force yourself to use the "manual" settings on the camera to learn the boundaries of your camera and what works with different light. Experiment with the extremes of the settings.

2. Do some night photography; remember the tripod!

3. Do some "candid" photos, whether they be everyday shots around the house or street shots. Go with the unplanned!

4. Set aside at least a day a month for an extended photo trip/session. Even better, at least once a week.

5. Forget about your Flickr network once in awhile and explore the vast art in Flickr of so many different styles and genres. Ask yourself-what specifically makes me like this image or not like that image?

6. Go to the library! Rather than spend tons of money of art books, check out the photography books in the library. It will take me YEARS to get through what my library has. If you're looking for a great one, try and find "Family of Man". If you have cable TV, look for movies and documentaries with photography themes, for example "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006)".

7. Do some film!

8. Challenge yourself to learn some specific new skills in a photo processing program like Photoshop.

9. Become more discriminating in how you judge your own photos.

10. Try to learn what other people are seeing in your photos. Is there a dominant theme in my comments? Why did this one get a lot of faves and not that one?

In answer to Ekler's question, as a business school professor I have to say absolutely yes, the U.S. needs to save Ford, GM, and Chrysler. The number of potentially lost jobs is enormous--for every auto worker there are 4 workers in supplier companies. There are 4000 "tier one" (i.e. direct) suppliers alone that would be directly affected.

Practically, these companies will be forced to undergo severe restructuring, as they should. The key however is their vision--can they convince investors they have a vision to be successful and competitive?

In part because of my large queue, and the fact I couldn't figure out which image I liked most out of these, and 120 film only has 12 images, blah blah blah... I thought it would be fun to just post a whole roll of film.

The Diana+, made by Lomography, is a replica of the Diana camera made by the Great Wall Plastic Factory in China in the 1960's. Meant as a novelty for kids, it (and its clones) became the fave of lomographers looking for quirky cameras. Its plastic lens creates odd focus, and its unreliable construction leaks light and has other fun flaws.

The Diana+ is a medium format camera, taking 120 film, and creating 12 6x6. This film is rather more expensive to both buy and process than 35mm film. The camera has four exposure settings, and focal length can be adjusted somewhat. In this roll, the light leaks come not from the camera, but from the roll not rolling up tightly. I used expired Fujifilm Velvia, ISO 100.

Whitcomb Locomotive Works was founded in 1878 and closed in 1952. It specialized in rail cars for material handling, such as coal mining or steel production. This engine is part of a small rail car that appeared to be used to simply move single cars around in a railyard. Seen in the Hesston Steam Engine Museum, in Hesston, Indiana.

Canon Powershot G7 through the viewfinder (TtV) of a Polaroid Spectra 2 (circa 1985), no other processing. Just like you'd expect if the Polaroid was taking the picture, eh?

Will lawns be retro one day? How much sense does it make to lay down water and chemicals (and lawn cutting labor!) so we can have a green carpet? I am culturally sensitive to the wonderful sight of a big clean lawn, but I also find lawns atttractive if you just let them go haywire. Weeds are flowers too.

The train set has now become a major hang-out site for the cats. MacDuff in the foreground (22 lbs!), Rufus in the background sitting in the leopard pattern comfy. In between the two of them you can see the top of what is the Lionel Hogwart's Express train, O gauge.
