My friend John Hewitt and I decided to go shoot some frozen lighthouses today. We got some pretty snazzy shots in both South Haven and St. Joseph.

The best ice is definitely in St. Joe's.

The White Pine Trail just outside Sand Lake, MI. The trees are all coated by about a 1/2 of ice that fell earlier this week.

(Taken just outside Sand Lake, MI ... earlier today ... it's amazing ... South of Grand Rapids and in the City itself ... no ice whatsoever ... 20 minutes to the North ... Winter Wonderland!)

I was torn whether to process this as a monochrome since there's precious little color in the scene anyway ...

Here's a horizontal that I just processed ... it's been sitting unused in my archive for 3 1/2 years.

Frozen Lighthouse Season '09

OK folks ... here we go! I hereby declare Frozen Lighthouse Season '09 OPEN!

Taken today in Grand Haven, MI ... about 4:15 pm.

A heavy cloud bank swallowed the sun so the actual sunset (@5:09) was less than spectacular ... but I think I got some pretty snazzy pictures between 4 and 4:30.

There is WONDERFUL ice out there right now (thanks to the strong (50-60mph) winds of the past week). If you live in West Michigan and you like frozen lighthouses ... head on out!

OK Folks,

For those of you who have been waiting for my bread 'n butter frozen lighthouse shots ... here we go:

I spent about 1 1/2 hours on the frozen tundra in South Haven today and have a large number of shots to share.

Starting with this one ... I know I bullseyed the subject here, but it was the only way I could capture these rays of light from where I was standing (and when you're standing on a skinny, slippery, frozen pier, surrounded by massive snow drifts, drastic repositioning isn't really an option).

Still ... mediocre composition aside, I like how this turned out ... and chronologically it fits near the beginning of the shoot, so I thought I'd begin with it.

Kidding aside ... this is Lake Michigan, as seen from the tip of the South Haven lighthouse pier. I'm not sure if I've ever seen it frozen this far out ... at least not for many years. There's absolutely NO open water to been seen anywhere.

Weren't we supposed to be gettin' a little global warming by now? ;-)

I snapped this shot right at the end of the night ... well after the sun had set.

I was driving home through Crystal Springs golf and country club and decided to stop to snap one or two more pictures ...

This pond was more thoroughly frozen over than the other two that I photographed earlier in the night.

Because I shot this at high ISO, I had to do some noise clean up here ...

This is essentially straight out of camera ... very little digital manipulation. This is really what the inner range light in Grand Haven looked like at a few minutes after 6 last night.
