Mono Sunrise

On our first morning of an Eastern Sierra/Death Valley whirlwind tour, we began with a sunrise at the South Tufa formations on Mono Lake. On this 25 second (long exposure) shot I used an LED flashlight to paint the foreground rocks. The day before started with near blizzard conditions leaving a nice dusting of snow in the foothills.

Another of my basic efforts to work with a simple comp. The thing I like about this is the range of textures and tones. Perhaps it is a little left heavy. The rocks you see in the middle ground can be seen in a completely different comp in the comments below.

Driftwood

Taken at Sycamore Cove just about 50 yards from my last posted image. This is where a wave got me up to about mid thigh when I got a little closer not long after I took this. This is a 3 second exposure using a Hoya ND-X 400 (9 stop) filter. I've corrected the blue color caused by the ND filter, made some minor curves adjustments and added structure in Nik Viveza. Other than that, it's pretty much as it appeared except you can't sense the 40 knot wind with the long exposure. There was another smaller driftwood log that I wanted to capture but when I was setting up the shot, a wave hit and hurtled it up the beach. That was my first warning for the day. After a few sprays of water got onto my lens and dried quickly in the wind, I didn't realize there were some fairly significant spots that ruined the last half of my shots.

Returning Storm

After a few days of sunshine, the rain returned tonight. I dug this up from earlier this month and did a little work on it for Slider Sunday. Used Nik Silver Efex Pro to convert to B&W, a gradient from bottom left to bring out the swirling water and a gradient top right where is was bright. Added the border top and bottom and the watermark.

A Star

Another image from yesterday's Fall color and Sunrise Beaches in the Santa Monica Mountains workshop with Steve Sieren (www.sierenphotography.com). There were quite a few photographers on the beach so I guess, contrary to where I have been in the past, this area is known for the great rocks and sunsets. It's north of Zuma Beach. There was even 1 photographer with a musician following him around playing guitar and harmonica. All in all, a great experience. On this shot I used the Lee .45 ND hard grad to pick up the patterns in the clouds. Steve's advice was, "get the exposure down then wait for the patterns in the water." There are so many images it was hard to pick but this is representative enough.

Marina Del Rey Sunset

Another basic sunset photo at Marina Del Rey using a Hoya ND-X 400 and Lee Hard Grad ND .45 filter to even out the light. This is a 30s exposure @ f16. When I got home I intended to back up all my archives but when I reached for the hard drive it fell on the floor. It got damaged and I lost about 4 months worth of images that hadn't been backed up. Lesson learned and I suppose the good thing is that all the techniques are still with me. I'm sad to see so much work lost but tomorrow will bring more beauty and from now on everything goes onto a RAID.

Malibu Sunset

This shot mixes a few of the things I have been doing over the past few weeks. Seaweed as a foreground element, waves going around it to create interesting patterns and a gradient filter to help balance the sky to the water. The houses on the horizon are in Malibu Colony where the stars have their beach cottages. I wonder why?
