From reading the book "Alone on the Ice" it seems that this was a mainstay for survival.....not too appetizing! This was in the Wordie Research Station built in 1940 by Shackleton's geologist. Now a historical Site for the Antarctic treaty System

This is a full view of the Vernadsky research station. This station is located on Galindez Island in Antarctica. This is where the ozone hole was first discovered. Research has continued year round using the Dobson spectrometer.
