Peaks of the Pamir Range form the backdrop of the Auitagh Valley and Ghez River Along the Karakoram Highway in SW China. On the right horizon is Chakragil (6,760 m), climbed only twice.

The Ancient Stone Fortress at Tashkurgan

Dawn light on the Pamir Range is a backdrop for an 8th century stone fortress at Tashkurgan, Xinjiang, China. The unnamed peak in the background is on the China-Tajikstan border. Afghanistan and Pakistan are just down the road.

Tashkurgan, a Tajik-populated town in a vast wilderness of lonely mud huts and goat herds, is a surprisingly comfortable and modern stopover on the Karakoram Highway.

Mustagh Ata Panorama

Mustagh Ata (7,549 m) is probably the easiest 7,000+ meter peak to climb and is summited frequently. It is at the NW end of China's 1,000-km-long Kunlun range.

Unknown Peak, Karakoram

Guides identified this peak, on the Pakistan - China border as K2, but I don't think that is correct. While this peak resembles K2, it is not high enough to be the 2nd highest mountain in the world at 8,611 m.
