This menacing looking grackle is perched on the side mirror of a car in front of us on the ferry to Padre Island, Texas. The occupant had his window down and the grackle was looking for a hand-out. With that beak, he could have done some damage to the vehicle if he didn't get a treat. :-)

Endangered whooping crane in flight

According to "All About Birds" the whooping crane is the tallest bird in North America, and was once at the brink of extinction. It is making a steady recovery thanks to intensive management efforts in Canada and the United States, and as of December 2004, 468 Whooping Cranes existed in the wild and in captivity. Today we saw about 12 of those birds. Although overcast, I am thrilled with my shots and so glad to have stumbled across so many of these rare birds. Explore #352, Feb 18/10. Thank you.

I`m still sorting through photos I took a year ago. I found these shots of an house finch taken in my back yard last December. Our mild weather with rain and cloud cover has prevented me from getting out much this year. I`m still waiting for a nice blanket of snow to cover the drab browns of winter. Happy new year everyone! Pileated Woodpecker In Flight

Not the best picture but I like the full spread of the wings on this pileated woodpecker. He kept flying back and forth, usually towards me in the shadows of the woods, so I found it very difficult to focus on him fast enough. Explore #454, Aug. 22/09. Thank you.

You would think with those big strong legs that this osprey could carry a lot more nesting material in one trip. I would have preferred to capture him with a fish! The osprey was so close, I couldn't get all of him in - no cropping. Explore #277, July 20/09. Thank you.

Golden Eagle

I photographed this beauty at the Ecomuseum Zoo in Montreal. It is a small zoo but offered some very interesting exhibits, including this marvelous golden eagle. It just sat perched close to us, with no fence to spoil the view. I was so close, I had to change from my 400 to 200 mm lens. Since it was closing time, we had to rush out, so I did not have the chance to ask why the eagle just sat there, without any obvious form of confinement.

Another cold day today but the sun was shining and this barred owl was taking full advantage of it. It allowed a number of photographers to get up close and basically ignored us. These shots are straight out of the camera - no cropping. Explore #196, Feb.15/11. Thank you.

Today it was wet, windy and cold so we were not able to do much birding on our annual trip to Pt. Pelee and Rondeau Parks. We decided to make a visit to the Blenheim sewage lagoons and were thrilled to find 2 female and 1 male Wilson's phalaropes. These are among the most colourful shorebirds and are unusual in that the female is the more colourful of the pair during mating season. She mates with several males, then once the eggs are laid, she abandons them, leaving the male to incubate the eggs and raise the young. This great find made my day! Explore #145. May 7/10. This male harlequin has two female friends. One flew up onto the rock, while the other two tried climbing up and had a hard time getting up the slippery slope. It looks like the one female is laughing at them or perhaps scolding them.

One snow goose and thousands of Canada geese! Today was bird counting day and there was no way I could count all the Canada geese in the lake. This one snow goose stood out in the crowd. As a rarity in this area, it was exciting to see one. Explore #46. Thank you.

A bright red forehead and black chin are obvious markings of this little winter finch (photo taken in January). This one is the female, as it lacks the pink breast like the male.
