Lord Street is a broad, mile long boulevard that is the main shopping street in Southport, Lancashire. Along one side are shops with Victorian glass-topped canopies and on the opposite side are gardens, fountains and classical buildings.

Napoleon III briefly lived on Lord Street before becoming Emperor of the French in 1851. During his reign, he caused much of the medieval centre of Paris to be replaced with broad tree lined boulevards, covered walkways and arcades, just like Lord Street. On the strength of this coincidence, it has been suggested that the redevelopment may have been inspired by memories of Southport's town centre.

The railings of the balcony in the Wayfarers Arcade, off Lord Street, Southport, viewed from below with an attractive tiled staircase in the background leading to .... who knows what??

Construction of the arcade started in 1890 and it opened in 1898.

The light above a reflective spire on the end of Southport pier, Lancashire. Shots of this spire from September 2005 are here:

The spire looked very different this year because of the blue sky.

Notice the distorted reflection in one of the supporting "fins" of the planks on the pier.

The roundabout at the town end of Southport pier, Lancashire, seems to only be used by girls, with ages ranging from about 4 to 60. I didn't see a single boy or man have a a ride!
