Handpainted sign with distlefink carvings

I’ve always been interested in various indigenous and folk arts. I’ve recently been thinking a lot about “Hex Signs”, barn signs, other arts of the Pennsylvania Germans. Although some believe Hex signs are simply for decoration, others believe they have links to ritual magic, superstition, and perhaps withcraft…or to ward off witches. Fact is, however, there is a form of ritual folk magic, similar to voodoo, that was and still is practiced to some degree in the region.

As far as the Hex Sign art goes…ol’ Zook came up with the idea, maybe it was during the late 50’s, of silk screening the designs on masonite disks and producing them in large numbers for sale. Zook apprenticed under the legendary “hexologist” and artist Johnny Ott, who with other older generation artists, handpainted their signs. These older guys came up with the idea of using a wood or metal disks. These disks made the art form more accessible, since it was easier and cheaper to mount a disk on your barn, house, or shed instead of having the designs painted directly on the structure. Of course, the practice of painting directly onto the barn still exists…

Another one of my weird coloring books / art zines. PMCB was initially produced in 2006. There’s a nice array of weird and grotesque pumpkin monsters in here. Some are happy, some are sad, and some are insane. There are gourds with sharp tusks, parasite infested squash, and a pumpkin vampire with a fruiting spore. All manner of teeth, horns, eyeballs, orifices, and even erupting brains!

Digest size (5.5" x 8.5"). 20 pages, saddle stapled with a colored paper cover and black & white interior illustrations. I used to go with colored cardstock covers, but I've recently experienced some unusual problems with the self use copy machines at both Staples and Kinkos. Seems that the toner fails to properly adhere to cardstock. This has been ongoing. If anyone has any ideas or insight on this please let me know...

This ZCB has an airbrushed cover. I did a handful of these when I initially made the book available. I idea was to create a little more interest in a "limited edition" sorta way. But folks are always drawn to the standard purple version...
