Murton, Co. Durham, England. Next to a Dalton Park, a new retail outlet on the site of the old colliery and pit heap.
The allotment gardens of the miners have been important not only as a place to grow vegetables for the family, and to keep chickens, but also a place where prize dahlias, leeks and crysanthemums can be grown for competitions, and where pigeons have been kept and bred for racing. The fencing normally comprises old doors - a form of 'recycling' and each garden has its very own character. A place of refuge and peace, mainly for men, these gardens have survived the demise of the mines.

It is the custom to make allotment garden fences from old doors in Co. Durham ('waste not want not!') These appear to have been burned at some point.

This bridge takes the Newcastle to Middlesborough railway line. The road to the right, now a footpath was previously a railway for coal trucks to bring the coals from Lady Londonderry's mines at Rainton to the docks at Seaham for export to London:below it to the left is the original road which still takes the traffic in single file. The houses to the left beyound the bridge are Cottages Road, originally built as colliery housing for miners at Dawdon Pit.
